About the role


This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to contribute to Thames Water's mitigation of enforcement risk relating to pollutions.

You will be part of a small team responding to the Environment Agency (EA) across a variety of communication mediums.

This high-profile role will involve working with our legal team at Eversheds Sutherland, as well as gaining exposure across the business at all levels.


The paramount focus of this role is our mitigation of any enforcement action potentially taken by our regulator because of a pollution incident.

You will be part of the small team contributing to supporting the business objective of minimising the impact of both our clean water and wastewater operations on the environment.

As such, you will have the opportunity to contribute towards our wider pollution prevention function.

  • Key areas of accountability will include:_
  • Project manage all Environment Agency requests for information, ensuring responses are sent to the Environment Agency in a timely manner; this includes:
  • Pollution Information Requests
  • Compliance Assessment Reports
  • Schedule 5b notification
  • Preparation of senior leadership and Eversheds to attend an Interview under Caution through the drafting of a statement to read out under caution
  • Enforcement Undertaking offers
  • Further Information is to be provided under caution
  • Contribute to the preparation of pollution reporting, incident reviews, mitigation, and defence evidence through interrogation of company systems and records. This information is used in communication with Eversheds Sutherland, senior management, and our regulators.
  • Provide technical advice, information, training support and interpretation of environmental impact data within the company to support incident response and mitigate enforcement risk.
  • Have awareness of the EA's Common Incident Classification Scheme (CICS) which is used to classify the severity of a pollution incident.
  • Have awareness of 16_02 which the EA use to categorise selfreporting of pollution incidents
  • Have awareness of the EA's Compliance Classification Scheme (CCS) which is used to assess and score our environmental permit compliance.

To be successful, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Ability to project manage and work under your own initiative whilst managing your workload by prioritising it effectively with a level of commitment, ensuring both individual and team deadlines are achieved.
  • Ability to work within a team environment with excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to produce reports, incident reviews and interpret data, and communicate this verbally as well as written.
  • Ability to understand Environmental Legislation and Regulation.
  • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and SharePoint is essential.
  • Hold a science degree (or equivalent). An Environmental Science degree would be advantageous.
  • Relevant experience in an applicable sector, operational role, technical position or knowledge of wastewater and/or clean water processes would be advantageous.

You will be part of a very busy team delivering clean water network modelling projects and studies, and at the forefront of the largest technological step-change in hydraulic modelling, since we got computers.

This will involve learning to undertake detailed hydraulic modelling studies using InfoWater and soon InfoWorks.

The water hydraulic modelling team is at the core of the business and feeds directly into growth and development planning, as well as our overall business strategy.
