Main Purpose

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Cooks.

at the 48 Force Support Squadron, Royal Air Force, RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom.


The main responsibility of this position is to prepare and cook a variety of foods in quantity, using standard or revised recipes.

Using a full range of quantity cooking procedures from common or frequently used to new or difficult recipes, prepares a variety of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, sauces, and gravies.

On a day-to-day


basis prepares four or more menu items for one meal which involves planning and coordinating steps to ensure that all items are ready for serving at the same time; or prepares menu items using special or difficult recipes involving many steps, ingredients, or long preparation time; or may do both.

Knowledge and Experience Required _- _Applicants must demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to prepare and cook a variety of foods in quantity, using recipes with raw, fresh ingredients (e.g. meat and vegetables).
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and time sequence steps needed to prepare food on time without overcooking or waste.
  • Ability to adjust recipes for servings required to include arithmetic computations to determine quantities needed to prepare required amounts by multiplying ingredients and calculating servings per container.
  • Ability to recognize characteristics of foods in deciding that raw materials are fresh.
  • Ability to judge and prepare food by color, consistency, temperature, odor, and taste.
  • Knowledge of food preparation principles; the physical changes that occur during the processing and cooking of food; food handling and storage practices; regular and special diet menus; and standard formulas used in yield testing.
  • Knowledge of food presentation; how to prepare specialty sauces; and carve and use fruits and vegetables as garnishes.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and sanitation standards and procedures to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Skill in operating, breaking down, and cleaning kitchen tools and specialized equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to read and understand menus, recipes, worksheets, food labels, computerized food production sheets, and metric conversion tables.

  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend necessary
- training. Position may be coded as mission essential.

  • A 6month probationary period will be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel overnight to US or other countries in the performance of official duties or attend necessary
- training.

  • Pre-employment physical is required for this position.
  • The work involves continual standing, walking, stooping, bending, pushing, reaching, lifting, and carrying of objects weighing up to 30 pounds; occasionally lifting over 50 pounds
  • Required to possess a Food Handler's License or meet health-screening requirements.
  • Required to maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness.
  • Will be required to work an 'as-rostered' schedule including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
