The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties: To have responsibility for the efficient national operation of the UKHSA FW&E microbiology service for optimal public health delivery.

In partnership with the Lead Public Health Microbiologist (LPHM) for FW&E Microbiology Services, to provide vision, leadership and direction to the FW&E Microbiology Laboratories, and to lead in strategic modernisation and development, including identification, prioritisation of, and support for specific modernisation developments and research areas To have overall responsibility for the provision of efficient and effective service delivery by the network of laboratories, and in accordance with UKHSA policies and procedures, and in line with the various accreditation schemes To lead delivery of the modernisation of FW&E microbiology diagnostic services, ensuring the provision of high-quality microbiological testing, which meets scientific requirements and complies with best practice and are safe, economical and effective To take responsibility for budget management and financial and business management of the FW&E Microbiology Service.

This includes having responsibility for budget setting in collaboration with Unit Heads, Laboratory Managers and the LPHM FW&E Microbiology Services ensuring compliance with UKHSA and Standing Financial Instructions.

To take a lead in managing income generation including managing externally funded research projects To lead on modernisation developments with the LPHM FW&E Microbiology Services to ensure that the laboratories makes an effective contribution within Microbiology Services.

To provide technical and professional support to the LPHM and the Business Manager, FW&E Unit Heads and Laboratory Managers.

To act as deputy to the Lead Public Health Microbiologist, along with other members of the Senior Management Team providing leadership to the Network in his/her absence.

To deputise for the Lead Public Health Microbiologist at meetings as agreed according to the skills of the post holder.

To support the Business Manager in performance monitoring of the UKHSAs microbiology assets within the FW&E Microbiology Servic The duties/responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present and is not intended to be exhaustive.
