Background


Special Collections is a division of Library Services at the University of Birmingham and is responsible for the Cadbury Research Library, the University's Modern Records (Records Management) Service, and the Shakespeare Institute Library.

The Cadbury Research Library, Shakespeare Institute Library, and Barber Fine Art Library serves the teaching and research needs of members of the University of Birmingham, providing a valuable resource for undergraduate and research students.

The libraries have an international reputation and are also used by academics and scholars from around the world as well as members of the wider public.

The Project Archivist post is primarily based at the Cadbury Research Library. The post sits within the University of Birmingham's Special Collections Department team structure.


Role Summary


The Project Archivist (Stuart Hall) will be part of the Stuart Hall Archive Project team, responsible for cataloguing the Stuart Hall archive held by the University of Birmingham to appropriate standards using CALM and making it available to researchers through the online archive catalogue (CalmView).

The post holder will report to the University Archivist, working closely both with the project team and the Cadbury Research Library to make accessible the archive collections of the University.

The post holder will contribute to the development of an associated Digital Humanities project.

The post holder will also play a role in the development of outreach and engagement activities to promote the Stuart Hall archive and to develop the research and teaching potential of the archive to all users, with particular consideration for minoritized and marginalised communities, including the curation of exhibitions and the presentation of conference papers when appropriate.


The post holder will survey the archive, impose an agreed catalogue structure, catalogue materials, and assist in the identification of parts of the archive for digitisation.

The project will run until 31 July 2026 and by the end of that time it is intended that the archive will be fully catalogued.

The archive is a collection of significant size. Emphasis will be on combining speed of work with high quality cataloguing to an appropriate standard in line with international cataloguing guidelines


Main duties

Collection Management:


  • To devise a workable cataloguing structure and catalogue all materials within the Stuart Hall archive in compliance with relevant cataloguing standards and/or liaising with colleagues
