Job description


The Team:

The Science Team is part of the Chief Scientist's Directorate in Natural England.

This Directorate is responsible for Natural England's Science, Evidence and Evaluation Strategy and supports its implementation to ensure Natural England is an evidence-led organisation.


We are looking for an enthusiastic professional to develop their knowledge and be part of a team of ornithological specialists.


As a Specialist with the Ornithology Team you will provide expertise on the conservation and management of coastal and terrestrial birds in England.


Key tasks:


  • Provide specialist ornithological advice both within Natural England and to external partners and stakeholders. This advice will ensure the needs of birds are fully considered in various planning casework projects and protected sites work.
  • Help to maintain an overview of the ornithological evidence base, including contributing to the delivery of evidence projects
  • Contribute to internal and external ornithology network
  • Work as part of a team of Specialist and Senior Specialist Ornithologists.
  • Preferably qualified to at least BSc level in an ecological discipline or can demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • Have a good knowledge of England's terrestrial and coastal birds, including an understanding of conservation status and drivers of population change.
  • Have experience of providing evidence based ornithological advice in relation to coastal and terrestrial birds.
  • Understand the legislation and policies protecting terrestrial and coastal birds.
  • Be effective in communicating (verbally and in written form) to multiple audiences.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is desirable.
