Temporary Admissions Officer / Team Leader - Children's Services

Role Length:
This opening assignment is for 6 months


  • Ensure that the LA's statutory responsibilities are carried out in accordance with admissions law.
  • Responsible for the development and review of admissions software and other systems to improve processes in administering and recording in year admissions data for analysis and reporting purposes for senior management and elected members.
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of current legislation and other educational factors that affect admissions and appeals in order to contribute to policy development and review.
  • Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external services to support the safeguarding of children, eg schools, Behaviour Support, SEN, LAC Team, Education Social Work, New Communities and Traveller services, Legal Services, Social Services, etc.
  • Regularly liaise with senior primary school staff and the secondary Behaviour and Attendance Collaboratives/Task Groups to ensure timely admission of children missing education through the Fair Access Protocols. This will require the post holder to attend meetings where necessary and use own judgement, advocacy and negotiation skills to attain the best possible outcome.
  • Review performance, identify and provide training and support for nine admission officers relating to the In Year admissions and Fair Access process.
  • Support vulnerable families (eg LAC, child protection, domestic violence cases) through timely liaison with relevant agencies and schools, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications:


  • Five GCSEs A
  • C.
  • NVQ Level 3 /three A levels/ BTEC National Diploma OR demonstrable experience in an administrative role at a supervisory level.

Experience & Knowledge:


  • Experience of collaborative working relationships with internal and external services and ability to use effective negotiation and advocacy skills to influence outcomes.
  • A minimum of three years administration experience using effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding of the working practices, complex regulations, procedures and operations across the specialist area relating to school admissions
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines with accuracy and deal effectively with competing priorities.
  • Experience of working with a range of IT systems and effective use of them for analytical purposes.
  • Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  • Knowledge of school admissions and appeals law.
  • Knowledge of the costs for products and services within own area of responsibility.

Skills:


  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, exercising judgement and making complex decisions.
  • Ability to use a range of complex IT packages relating to school admissions including Capita ONE, Microsoft Office and Northgate.
  • Good organisation skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Able to understand how to analyse, interpret and present complex information from a variety of sources in order to inform decision making and review of procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and delegate workloads.
  • Ability to diffuse difficult situations and intervene to provide support to colleagues as necessary.
  • A confident approach when liaising with a range of stakeholders.
