Description
The Times is looking for a homepage reporter to cover breaking news stories.


You will be a reporter with the ambition to break fresh ground, land exclusives and deliver reliable and speedy breaking news.

Applicants must have a track record of covering live stories across a broad range of areas along with demonstrable expertise in current affairs and politics.

Knowledge of foreign affairs, business news and markets would also be valuable.


Responsibilities

  • Consistently deliver accurate, engaging copy to strict deadlines
  • Cover major breaking news stories across a broad range of areas
  • Commission visual storytelling elements such as videos, charts, graphics, maps and designs
  • Pitch agendasetting exclusive story ideas to the news desk for
  • Build and maintain excellent contacts in current affairs and politics
  • Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote Times content
  • Write across all sections and platforms seamlessly
  • Work collaboratively with other sections across the paper, particularly digital and graphics, to ensure the best presentation of stories on our digital platforms

Skills and experience

  • A master's or degree in journalism or an NCTJ qualification
  • Experience writing breaking news for a national newspaper, magazine or news website
  • Demonstrable expertise in current affairs and politics
  • Keen attention to detail and meticulous factchecking
  • Good understanding of audience data and SEO techniques to maximise search results
  • Able to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Times
  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines
  • Excellent presentation skills and able to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Unflappable and reliable under pressure
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
