Background


This role is located within the Careers Network team (CN), which exists to help students and graduates realise the potential of their University of Birmingham experience and degree, helping them to positively shape the world around them, powering possibilities for themselves, and others, throughout their careers.

The team comprises circa 60 staff across several specialist areas supporting employability, enterprise, and entrepreneurship within and beyond the curriculum, engaging with employers, alumni, and external partners to support this endeavour.

Role Summary


External Engagement is a key service provision within Careers Network and plays an important part in the University achieving its Employability Strategy.

Opportunities for students to engage externally both outside and within their discipline impacts across many strategic areas including graduate employability, student experience, and alumni and external engagement.


The post will develop a programme of activity for Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research students informed through collaboration with employers and with a focus on employability skills development and employer-led projects.

The post will be instrumental in developing and maintaining effective relationships with a wide range of employers offering jobs, projects, work experience and internships for postgraduate students (PGT & PGR) on a regional, national and international level.

The post will also undertake group work and information sharing sessions for postgraduate students.

The post holder will be managed by the Careers Network's Postgraduate External Engagement Manager and will work within the External Engagement team, collaborating with the Postgraduate Careers Team and the University's Graduate School.


The role will directly impact on the success of the University's Employability Strategy and the UGS Strategy by offering External Engagement opportunities to our Postgraduate (PGT & PGR) students, a significant proportion of which are international students.


Main Duties

Relationship Management, Skills development, employer-led projects and events

  • Support the development and management of new and existing relationships with external employers locally, nationally and globally for the purpose of generating higher level skill related work experience/internship and mentoring
