Job Summary:


The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) will play an important role in the day-to-day activities of the Cyted UK Ltd laboratory.

The role holder will report to a Biomedical Scientist or MLA Coordinator.

The MLA will perform routine technical and scientific work in the laboratory under the supervision of the Biomedical Scientists/MLA Coordinator.

The role holder will be responsible for complying with local standard operating procedures (SOPs) for processing diagnostic specimens to a high standard.

The MLA will be expected to work efficiently in a busy and dynamic environment, following the prioritisation of workload set by senior laboratory staff.

They will also assist with training and support of Junior MLAs where appropriate.

The role holder will be expected to maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with policies and regulations.


Working Pattern and Location:

The role is a full-time position with a standard 37.5 hour working week.

The role holder may be required to work flexibly, including participation in a rota to work Saturday mornings every few weeks (overtime paid).


The Medical Laboratory Assistant will be based at the Cyted UK Ltd's laboratory in Huntingdon, 2 Falcon Road, Hinchingbrooke Business Park, Huntingdon, United Kingdom, PE29 6FG.


What you will be doing:


  • Booking in patient cases on the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Assisting with specimen reception.
  • Undertaking routine laboratory techniques in line with applicable Standard Operating Procedures under the direction or supervision of a Biomedical Scientist or MLA Coordinator.
  • Assisting in the running and maintenance of slide scanning and uploading service for both diagnostic and research work.
  • Carrying out clinical specimen preparation and assisting dissection (cut up) under guidelines laid down by The Royal College of Pathologists.
  • Managing laboratory waste disposal including reagents and clinical specimens.
  • Receipt, storage and distribution of laboratory consumables and reagents, maintaining the departmental inventory control system.
  • Undertaking routine tasks essential to the general good maintenance and housekeeping of the laboratory e.g. daily upkeep of equipment, cleaning, washing up.
  • Maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with IBMS, UKAS 15189 and HTA policies.
  • Cytological processing of specimens obtained using Cyted's oesophageal cancer early detection medical device.
  • Filing/dispatch of important diagnostic material including microscope slides, paraffin blocks, and paperwork.
  • Record keeping of various laboratory activities.
