Purpose of the Role


Supporting an Alliance contract based from our Brentwood office (with flexible working), you will support multiple projects from inception through to delivery and beyond.

As the Alliance Environmental Manager, you will oversee and ensure ecological risks are identified, considered against project scope and appropriately communicated and controlled.

Supporting the operational teams you will be responsible for ensuring risk is appropriately managed and client expectations are met whilst interfacing with the Client, Design and Construction teams as well as external stakeholders.


Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability

  • Lead the development and maintenance of the programme's EMS, keeping up to date with relevant changes in environmental legislation and initiatives including international legislation and client requirements where applicable.
  • Establish and maintain a fully integrated work method to provide and carry through the full and timely delivery of all works.
  • Monitor all forms of required consents and monitor evidence of all works being completed in a manner that satisfies all conditions set out by the consents granting bodies.
  • Monitor the environmental sustainability performance of all works.
  • Assess, analyse and collate environmental and social performance data and reporting information to internal staff, Clients and regulatory bodies.
  • Review and update the Project Environment and Social Management Plans, Site Waste Management Plans and specialist procedures as appropriate.
  • Act as a point of contact between the regulatory authorities (Environment Agency, Natural England, Local Authorities) and other thirdparty consultees for the project onsite based issues.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and near miss events in accordance with Colas Rail standards to identify and share lessons learned. Monitor and report to line management the implementation of actions to prevent recurrence.
  • As you will expect the organisation may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.

Business

  • Prepare presentations for the senior project team and workforce to share environmental best practice, project challenges and global sustainability issues.
  • Regularly attend safety and sustainability meetings to share project progress and challenges.
  • Manage budgets and costing against environmental deliverables.
  • The management of ecological surveys & biodiversity net gain commitments.

Organisation

  • Promote a positive environmental sustainability culture through proactive engagement and communications with Project Teams, including the supply chain.

Team Performance

  • Undertake investigations on environmental incidents and subsequent lessons learned as and when required. Monitor and report to line management the implementation of actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Management of consents to ensure works can progress. Early engagement with relevant bodies and the delivery team on consenting matter to ensure seamless delivery of consenting requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage toolbox talks and environmental inductions for all staff on the Framework contract.
  • Review close out / investigate close calls.
  • Undertake Safety on Call as per the team rosta.

Technical

  • Produce, review and update the key project documents; Environmental Site Management Plans (ESMP), Site waste management plans (SWMP), habitat management plans (HMP), work package plans (WPP), task briefings (TBS).
  • Undertake Environmental compliance evaluations, inspections and audits at prescribed intervals record outputs and liaise with site management to ensure actions are completed.
  • Collate and report environmental data for project environmental KPI's.

Support

  • Nurture innovated solutions and encourage these methods through training and mentoring.

Safety & Quality

  • Review Environmental & Social Appraisals to ensure risks are considered.
  • Oversee specialist contractors; environmental monitoring such as noise, vibration, dust & water quality.

Person Specification

  • Active Member of a relevant Professional Body e.g. IEMA, CIEEM.
  • An understanding of the rail industry.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant codes of practice and industry standards and have broad understanding of environmental legislation.
  • Experience of technical report writing and ability to draft technical reports under guidance to an acceptable technical quality.
  • Takes ownership and accountability for tasks and sees through to successful completion.
  • Good communicator
