Job summary:

The Government People Group exists to work with departments, professions, and functions to build a modern, effective Civil Service.

We support the government workforce with the right skills and capability.

We are working with leaders to get the right people in the right jobs, with the right skills and continuous learning to excel in their roles.

We provide leadership, and in turn, create leaders with exceptional line management capability across departments, influencing partners in the wider public sector and beyond.

This involves getting our retention and reward strategy right, to nurture specific skills, and create pride and resilience in our workforce.

Our role is also to provide system leadership across central government in pulling together back office services.

Collectively, we help support the Cabinet Office's priority to drive efficiencies, and reforms that will make government work better, to ultimately provide a better service to the public.

Job description:

Government People Group (GPG) is a large business unit within the Cabinet Office.

It brings together back office services across government and supports the Civil Service with high volume HR and finance processes, aligned to the government's modernisation agenda.

Within GPG, the Platforms, Data and Interoperability (PD&I) directorate provides first-class platforms and services for over 450,000 civil servants, including recruitment, data analysis, skills and learning solutions.

It provides recruitment services for around 70 percent of the Civil Service.

As an UI/UX Designer you'll work in multidisciplinary teams, alongside researchers and developers, to deliver world-class, user centred services. You'll work on ambitious projects transforming the services we provide for civil servants. We have digital services covering the whole employee journey, from recruitment to retirement.

  • Improve the user experience for civil servants with systems that are intuitive, easy to use and mobileenabled
  • Deliver efficiency and value for money through better systems and services which support productivity and seek to reduce costs
  • Drive convergence around processes and data, including the consolidation and modernisation of technology platforms, while maintaining choice for departments

Through this strategy, our ambition is to free up civil servants to focus on what they do best: engaging with and delivering for citizens.

What you will be working on:

You will join the Digital Learning Team, which delivers the Civil Service Learning website to over 500,000 civil servants across the UK and abroad for over 120 departments, arms length bodies and other organisations.

The Civil Service Learning website and platform is a digital learning platform that is used across Government to build capability, grow careers and support the objectives of government departments and professional groups.

It provides a single, fit-for-purpose learning service, providing access to the training and learning opportunities required by a Brilliant Civil Service.

Every feature of the new service has been extensively researched with users to ensure the best possible experience for the learner.

As a UI/UX Designer you will:

  • use research and analytics to understand users needs, identify service failures and test different designs
- use evidence to challenge assumptions, negotiate with product owners and rationalise your design decisions
- design collaboratively and in the open, engaging your whole team with the design process and adapting it if necessary
- create prototypes and mockups to explain complex ideas and support the development process
- set the design direction and good practice within your teams
- champion accessibility and inclusion, consider the impact of new technologies and make sure that designs meet accessibility, legal and security requirements
- encourage knowledge sharing within and between teams, making sure that your designs are reusable and consistent with the GOV.UK Design System
- contribute to the government design community and assess and review the design of other government services
