The Armed Forces Remuneration division is recruiting for a new policy adviser for its Armed Forces Pension Team, and we'd like to hear from you

Defence People Armed Forces Remuneration (AF Rem) is a division in the Chief of Defence People (CDP) organisation, which is at the heart of the MOD's Head Office, developing significant new policies and programmes relating to the workforce to ensure continued delivery of defence outputs.

Within that organisation, the AF Rem Pensions team plays a key role in producing and maintaining joint personnel policy which is aimed at enabling defence to recruit and retain sufficient and motivated Service Personnel whilst delivering value for money for the Department.

Today's Military workforce has expectations and aspirations about careers that mirror the rest of society.

Our task is to contribute to an 'offer' that is good enough to attract individuals to join and stay in the Armed Forces.

Whilst making sure that we make best use of taxpayer's money.

The Armed Forces Pensions team is responsible for 1.2m members and an annual spend of £4.5Bn; the government's total military pension liability is £196Bn.

This post provides an excellent opportunity for you to develop a deep knowledge of Service personnel policy, how policy development evolves through to delivery, as well as ensuring clarity in communication, working closely with military colleagues, and briefing at the highest levels in defence.

It is a great place to work for veterans.

As a division we are also enthusiastic advocates for assisting and facilitating our team members in their personal development. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week

Job description:

These are vital posts, covering an important part of the offer for our Armed Forces and essential in ensuring that 180,000 Service personnel (and many hundreds of thousands more ex-Service personnel) are motivated, attracted and feel valued by their total reward package.

You will sit in the AF-Rem, Armed Forces Pension Schemes (AFPS) Team of eight people, with responsibility for pension related policies, among a number of other related issues in developing them to take account of political, legislative, financial and presentational imperatives.

You will be responsible for creating detailed policy proposals, including legislation; transition and implementation plans; assist communications and project delivery.

Persuasive and evidence-based policy papers for senior management boards and Ministerial consideration will be required on a regular basis, including input to parliamentary business in support of the People Secretariat.

The team as a whole is responsible for making sure that there is effective and efficient secretariat support to the Armed Forces Pension Board and the Scheme Advisory Board.

This includes the finalisation of the quadrennial actuarial valuation process, which involves all public sector schemes and has wide cross-government reach, ensuring that the Pension Board, Defence Business Services, Defence Resources and other key stakeholders are involved appropriately in the process.

As new Transformation work gets under way, you will need to keep up to date with proposed changes across armed forces personnel policy to make sure that any implications for pension policy are fully taken in to account.

The post offers you an excellent opportunity to work closely with other government departments, notably HM Treasury, HMRC and the Government Actuary's Department (GAD), as well as with our colleagues in Defence Business Services.

You should expect to support wider work appropriate to your broader banding both within the AF-Rem team and across the Defence People area with other key responsibilities as agreed or directed by your line manager.
