  • Job description
  • We are the Environment Agency. We work in partnership with government, local councils, businesses, and communities to manage the impacts of climate change, perhaps the most serious longterm threat to the environment, people, and wildlife that we face.
In this role you'll lead on activities to deliver our Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Strategy.

The role is focused on developing our programme of flood risk projects, contributing toward planning permissions, providing clear Flood Risk Activity Permits, and updating our modelling programme to better understand flood risk.

A typical week may involve:

  • Influencing project teams to negotiate design options that achieve multiple benefits e.g. flood benefits, carbon savings and ecology gain through our projects.
  • Writing and assuring business cases for flood risk management schemes
  • Improving ways of working to better integrate delivery between our contractors, consultees, and external partners
  • Overseeing and supporting team members in responding to flood risk related enquiries and determining Flood Risk Activity Permits and Planning Applications
  • Supporting our incident response responsibilities.

We offer a rewarding career both in terms of personal development and making a difference to people and businesses who are affected by flood risk now and in the future.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

  • The team
  • The Partnership & Strategic Overview (PSO) team provide a technical and strategic overview of flooding across Kent and South London and East Sussex, delivering projects to contribute to the target of protecting 336,000 homes. The team is highly skilled in technical disciplines and our ability to persuade and influence.

The whole team collectively support one another, and you will be welcomed and provided with all the training and guidance needed to be successful.

  • Experience/skills required
  • Above all we're looking for tenacity to see work through. You'll have some project management skills and ideally experience in a flood related field. You'll have a positive approach and a desire to work collaboratively and be dedicated to driving your own personal and professional development.
A qualification or experience in engineering, hydrology, environmental science, or geography would be advantageous.
Experience of some of the following would be desirable:

  • Flood and coastal risk management or related experience
  • Project experience of working with consultants and professional partners
  • Knowledge of the Environment Agency's flood risk management responsibilities
  • Experience of hydraulic modelling and data handling.
  • Arc GiS mapping experience.
  • Experience of reviewing construction documents and drawings.
A full UK driving licence is essential. This role involves regular travel to meet with partners and undertake site visits.

  • Contact and additional information
  • We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and value a diverse workforce.

We offer an extensive range of employee benefits and we're fully invested in developing team member's skills and careers and offer fully funded opportunities to develop further academic/professional qualifications.

The roles will be contractually based in Orchard House, ME19 5SH. Most staff spend some of their working week working from home as well as EA offices.
