We are looking to appoint a professional, experienced Deputy Stage Manager for the Royal Shakespeare Company's forthcoming 2023 Stratford season.

The position is offered as a fixed term contract, based in Stratford-Upon-Avon.


As
Deputy Stage Manager reporting directly to the Company Manager and Stage Manager you will be on the book for the production, including preparing the 'prompt script' during rehearsals and technical rehearsals, noting all script changes,blocking and cue points.

You will be required to share the script and updates with all technical teams, acting company and understudies and Access departments.

You will be required to provide effective cueing of all performances during the run, and maintainingthe show as dictated by the artistic requirements and direction of the production.


You will support the Stage Manager with the day-to-day management of the acting company and stage management team and deputise as required.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Supporting the Company Manager and SM team to ensure the smooth running of rehearsals, technical rehearsals, onstage understudy rehearsals and performances, ensuring that all daily requirements and needs are met
  • Working collaboratively with all members of the creative team and technical departments to facilitate and realise the artistic aims for the production throughout the rehearsal process and liaise with the Producer, creative team members, technical HODs,department staff, stage management, and the acting company to ensure the efficient flow of information as necessary for the smooth running of the show
  • Assisting the Stage Manager with the compilation of the daily call sheet and generally overseeing the rehearsal room schedule / show calls working within the RSC / Equity agreement
  • Whilst being specifically responsible for entrance and exit plots to also collaborate with the SM team to compile and distribute all other show related paperwork including (but not limited to) all the rehearsal generated notes, production meeting minutes,plots, prop notes, risk assessments, show plots and cue sheets and show reports as well as any company related incident / accident report and actor time sheets as required. To deputise for the Stage Manager when required
  • Working with the Assistant Director to provide up to date script changes and ensure these are distributed to the acting company. Also overseeing and supporting understudy rehearsal process whilst strategically maintaining the integrity of the show and communicatingany changes, contingencies, and understudy situations to all departments, FOH Managers, Producers, and the creative team, to ensure any necessary adjustments and notifications are made and in place
  • To support all RSC productions (including R&D workshops, touch tours, events, pre and post shows talks, insight sessions and access performances) as required, by providing Stage Management cover when requested by the Head of Company & Stage Management
To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have the following skills and experience:

  • Must have professional DSM experience working on busy and large scale productions
  • Excellent Team Leadership and communications skills
  • Time Management and Scheduling
  • Understanding of H&S policies and production of Risk Assessments
  • The ability to work well under pressure
This is a full time, fixed term role.

There will be a prep week prior to the start of each productions rehearsal which will take place in Stratford-Upon-Avon, rehearsals will take place in London.
