Harmeny Education Trust is a children's charity that provides therapeutic care and education for children with complex additional support needs. We work on a day and all-year-round residential basis, supporting children and young people aged 5 to 18 years.- Harmeny is situated in a beautiful 35-acre woodland estate, which includes residential and education accommodation, community garden, orchard, wildlife habitats, children's play areas and a mountain bike track. Harmeny is located in Balerno on the outskirts of Edinburgh, at the foot of the Pentland Hills; we are easily accessible by bus and we have car parking on-site.- We are currently seeking an
Estates Maintenance Assistant to join Harmeny on a
full-time employed basis. Reporting to the Estates and Facilities Manager, the successful applicant will work as part of a team to ensure that all planned and reactive hard, soft and building fabric maintenance and repairs are completed to a high standard across Harmeny's properties and grounds.- The post-holder will also carry out a wide range of maintenance tasks across various disciplines, including electrical, plumbing, decorating, minor building work, general DIY and refurbishments, adhering to legislation, health and safety standards and Harmeny policies and procedures.- Applicants must have and be able to demonstrate previous experience, knowledge and skills gained in a multi-skilled maintenance role, particularly in relation to maintenance and facilities services, preferably in a similar environment.- The successful applicant will be part of a small team working in a busy environment. Excellent organisational skills and a proactive approach to maintenance are therefore key requirements for the role. Key Responsibilities

  • To work as part of the Estates team to ensure that all planned and reactive hard, soft and building fabric maintenance and repairs are completed to a high standard across the estate's properties and grounds, whilst adhering to legislation, health and safety standards and Harmeny policies and procedures.

Principle Responsibilities:


  • Promote a positive ethos consistent with Harmeny's vision, purpose and core values.
  • Complete a range of hard, soft and fabric maintenance tasks required to the buildings and estate, both internally and externally, including minor electrical and plumbing, decorating, minor building work, general DIY and refurbishments.
  • Undertake remedial actions reported through the Estates helpdesk, with instruction from the Estates and Facilities Manager (EFM), ensuring that tasks are completed, updated or closed where necessary.
  • Ensure that planned maintenance programme tasks are completed, updated or closed where necessary, and that the EFM is kept updated on progress.
  • Provide adhoc general support to each of the departments across Harmeny, which includes (but is not limited to) space management, removal/installation of associated furniture and appliances.
  • Ensure that all statutory maintenance and safety inspections of the Harmeny fleet vehicles have been completed, recorded and regularly reviewed, whilst ensuring that all vehicles are regularly cleaned and presentable.
  • Carry out caretaking duties, including assisting with the preparation of school events.
  • Assist with grounds maintenance to ensure that the grounds, roads and pathways and presentable, free from debris and hazards.
  • Provide grounds maintenance support during winter, which includes snow clearance and gritting, to ensure that the site remains operational and free from hazards.
  • Ensure that Estates resources, machinery and equipment are used and maintained according to legislation and guidelines.
  • Work in accordance with all Harmeny policies and procedures.
  • Undertake any training and development needed for the role.
  • Attend supervision, annual performance review, and team meetings, as required.
  • Undertake any other duties delegated by the EFM or another member of management, which are consistent with the role of Estates Maintenance Assistant.
Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience


Essential:


  • A full, clean driving licence allowing the use of a company van (during working hours as required).
  • Experience of working in a multiskilled maintenance role, preferably within a regulated setting such as care/education.
  • Basic computer skills and IT literacy.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to effectively time manage activities and tasks
