Description
The Infectious Disease service in Bristol is seeking a Consultant in Infectious Disease. Applicants must be accredited in Infectious Disease with an additional specialty (e.g. General Internal Medicine, Microbiology).

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing department in a vibrant city, based at the new Southmead Hospital.

It is the regional centre for major trauma, neurosciences, plastics and burns, orthopaedics and renal services. Microbiology services are delivered by Severn Infection Sciences, a collaboration between the trust and UKHSA.

The laboratory is based at Southmead and provides diagnostics services for North Bristol, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust and the Royal United Hospital Trust, Bath.

Successful applicants will join a team of 7 Consultants working within the Department of Infectious Disease (currently 4.1 WTE) working closely with an additional 8 microbiology, 3 virology and 2 mycology consultants based in Infection Sciences.

We deliver care for 22 patients on our dedicated ward and consults to specialities across North Bristol NHS Trust.

We have 6 lobbied isolation rooms and are the regional centre for the inpatient management of infections such as multi-drug resistant TB.

We run outpatient services for all aspects of infection including TB, and travel.
- onsultant care to patients on the designated ID ward bed-base - the ward is a combination of those with infection and general medical conditions.

  • Provision of consult advice with continuing responsibility for the care of patients with infection to all departments within the Trust in liaison with consultant colleagues
  • Provision of specialist clinical advice to GPs & hospital colleagues within the region.
  • Provision of inreach and specialty advice to the Acute Medical Unit and Emergency Department with the aim of avoiding admissions and giving early senior specialist input to patient care.
  • Participation in emergency planning, training and delivery in relation to potential infectious disease threats
  • Outpatient care through standard and virtual clinics (TB, general ID) and other specialist infection clinics as interests and qualifications allow (including HIV, NTM, travel).
  • Participation in an anticipated 1 in 6 weekend/bank holiday on call rota delivering consult support to the acute medical unit and ward rounds on the ID ward.
  • To take a flexible approach to crosssite and crossdepartmental working. The role is based at Southmead Hospital but crosssite working to other local hospitals may be required in the future.
  • Postholders accredited in microbiology may have opportunity to deliver sessions within Infection Sciences as time and rotational opportunities allow.

The successful applicant will participate in a rota covering the ward, clinics and consults with the possibility of rotational opportunities to the microbiology service for those with suitable experience.

The appointment of this post is the final step of a development programme enabling us to take over the entire ward unit (38 beds in total) and we will launch a 7-day service shortly after all people are in place.

There will be a 1 in 6 weekend/bank holiday ward round and consults commitment. There is no involvement in acute medical on call.

We are seeking individuals who will bring enthusiasm, teamwork, flexibility and innovation to a growing, rapidly evolving department.

Post-holders would be required to work in close partnership with our allied departments (Infection Sciences, HIV Medicine) and those with academic and educational interests are particularly welcome.

There are strong links with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

Recently named the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times ("cool, classy and supremely creative"), Bristol is a vibrant city with a rich maritime history.

Famed for bridges, balloons, boats and Banksy, there are also great schools, theatres, the zoo, a diverse food and drink scene, museums, beautiful parks and stunning architecture.

Somerset, the Southwest coast and Bristol Airport are minutes away and there are fast transport links to Wales and London.

This post is the final part of a key expansion programme that will allow the department to manage a whole inpatient ward and deliver a 7-day ID service with a weekend frequency of 1 in 6.

Posts will be based in the Department of Infectious Disease.

Between 4-5 months a year will be spent providing consultant care on the inpatient ward with the remainder of the time delivering outpatient and consult services in partnership with Severn Infection Sciences.

We work closely with colleagues at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, the main site of which is located 4 miles from Southmead - occasional MDTs and meetings take place here and ID consultants may rotate here from time to time to provide cross cover.
