Description

NHSBT Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, solid organ transplantation and tissue banking.

RCI
provide reference and blood provision services to hospitals using advanced red cell serology.

We investigate immune haemolytic disorders, the resolution of blood group anomalies and complex red cell antibody problems and provide blood for specific patients.


You will undertake duties commensurate with the current level of training requirements and receiving regular professional competence appraisals by NHSBT trainers and managers.

You'll work in an environment where you can develop your specialist skills and scientific education. You will be supported to complete the IBMS Registration Portfolio.


Main duties of the job


You will carry out clinical technical duties under the supervision of a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist.

You will gain the education, training & experience necessary for HCPC registration and be required to:


  • Handle blood & tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers & equipment
  • Perform, analyse, record & interpret a wide range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of patient test results for organ transplant and blood transfusion and the issue of blood and tissue products, with the support of the team
  • Provide cover in times of operational difficulty, with reasonable notice.


In some of our departments, you may be required to work up to 15 days over weekends and bank holidays per year as rostered, with reasonable notice and be able to participate in the extended working day for the department.


About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience in the use of laboratory equipment and techniques
  • Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), or equivalent Systems

Qualifications and Training

  • Currently a fulltime student on an IBMS accredited undergraduate (BSc) Biomedical Science sandwich degree
  • Have passed year one university assessments with no resits
  • Must pass subsequent university assessments with no resits before start of placement
