Job summary:


The Research Patient and Public Involvement and Experience Lead (PPIE Lead) will be responsible for the development and delivery of an effective PPIE strategy for research across University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), which comprises multiple research teams and sites with a variety of funded Infrastructure.


This is an exciting 12 month opportunity that will be based at UHB, and is offered at 30 hours per week.


The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the PPIE activities of UHB, making a valued contribution to the delivery of research and improving the experience of patients participating in research.

The post requires excellent communication skills, a sound understanding of PPIE in research and the ability to work autonomously.

Key aspects of the role include:

To implement a PPIE strategy in partnership with the Deputy Directors of Research for PPIE / EDI and the wider Trust RD&I team.

To provide advice on the strategic policy and governance issues relating to PPIE/E that may affect the strategy.


Ability to provide PPIE/E advice to research teams, and provide advice to the R&D Management Group relating to matters surrounding PPIE/E.


To provide a strategic link with NIHR funded infrastructure in optimising PPIE/E activities associated with trials and research grant development and delivery.

To work with Research Application Support Team to cost PPIE activities into grants.


Main duties, tasks & skills required:

As a Research Patient and Public Involvement and Experience Lead you will play an integral role in advising on and providing high quality PPIE input into research at UHB.

You will liaise and work collaboratively with campus NIHR infrastructure, NHS and national CRF PPIE leads, Patient Research Ambassador groups, Young Person Panels and other relevant groups to deliver UHB PPIE strategy.

The post holder will work with the Director of R&D Operations and key clinical staff, to provide support on patient and public related issues and will be expected to develop this role.

The post holder will work closely with the R&D senior management team and is expected to work autonomously.

The PPIE Lead will devise and facilitate many forms of communication to both members of the public and to professional colleagues, to attend and facilitate engagement events and collaborations to enable patients and the public to have meaningful and rewarding involvement in the work of R&D, locally and nationally (NIHR UK Clinical Research Facility Network).
