The post holder will work with the mental health team based in the acute hospital to support the delivery of excellence in care.


The Post holder will work as an integral part of the mental health team, working in collaboration with The Royal Wolverhampton.

The Post holder will work with all stakeholders to support improvements to patient quality of care.

The post holder will

  • Play a pivotal role in supporting and managing mental health patients that attend or are admitted to Walsall Healthcare Trust.
  • Be supported by the wider Mental Health Team within Walsall Healthcare Trust & working in Collaboration with The Royal Wolverhampton.
  • Provide short term intervention for patients that attend hospital and present with mental health crisis in the acute hospital.
  • Support with preventing admission and ensuring safe and effective treatment is given to the patient.
  • Work closely with partner agencies when required to support the patients' care and treatment.
  • Work with patients of all ages; this will include CAMHS and older adults.


This is an autonomous role for an accountable practitioner within a mental health team to offer mental health support within an acute hospital.

The job role will require the post holder to work over a 7 day working week.


This is a new post to offer Mental Health expertise within an acute trust at Walsall Healthcare Trust to support the care provided to patients who present with mental health issues.


The post holder will aim to support throughout the hospital with the management of patients who may present in crisis or have complex vulnerabilities.


The post holder will be based with the wider mental health team and integrate within the emergency department, AMU and acute medical wards when required, to ensure a joined up approach, supporting the needs of those presenting with mental health issues in the hospital and expediting appropriate discharge.

The post holder will require strong communication skills, advanced problem solving and decision-making skills to facilitate evidence
- based working and a collaborative approach with advanced clinical skills in risk assessment and management.


The Post Holder will support colleagues in developing and building effective communication between all stakeholders, working across community and partnership agencies to provide excellent clinical care to patients with mental health issues and complex presentations.


The job will be based at Walsall Healthcare Trust; however there is the expectation that the post holder will cross cover and may be required to work at The Royal Wolverhampton.

To manage and support quality performance and clinical activity by providing professional nursing leadership and guidance, clinical advice and management in relation to the key dimensions of health care quality:

  • Patient safety
  • The effectiveness of all health care interventions
  • Patient experience
  • The environment in which care is delivered.
  • Demonstrate a high level of skill in assessing and managing risk, including clinical as well as generic risk assessment.
  • To support the Emergency Department staff in the management of risk presented by patients presenting with mental health needs including completing and contributing to robust risk assessments and risk management plans.
  • Based on the assessment, to formulate and convey sensitive, complex and sometimes unwelcome information to clients and other professionals and manage this as constructively as possible.
  • To provide an excellent working knowledge of safeguarding skills and supporting complex patient presentations.
