Description

The Energy & Sustainability team within the Estates and Facilities Directorate aims to reduce the environmental impact of the Trust and help deliver high quality sustainable healthcare.

The purpose of the role is day-to-day management of all waste streams, which will involve.

  • Delivery, implementation and monitoring of waste streams and their contracts including clinical, domestic, recycling, and sanitary waste, ensuring compliance both Trust wide and appointed contractors.
  • Responding to colleagues' queries regarding waste management.
  • Management of the Trusts reuse of surplus equipment system.
The post holder will work alongside the Energy Officer with additional support from the Energy, Waste and Sustainability Manager. They will engage with clinical and corporate staff to promote sustainability.


The main focus of the role involves working with inpatient and community teams to safetly manage clinical and other wastes.

It will require the post holder to develop relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders as well as data management and waste contractor compliance.

Understanding of clinical waste management and the waste heirarchy.


The post holder will therefore require excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work remotely and without direct supervision and be good IT skills.

The Energy, Waste and Sustainability Team is a small, friendly team within the wider Estates and Facilities department. The team work remotely from each other, supporting and reacting to the needs of colleagues when required.

The team leads the Trust's Green Plan and as such, is mindful of our environmental impact.
Waste

  • Support a Trust wide waste management system that is safe, efficient and which delivers waste segregation as detailed in HTM 0701: The Safe Management of Healthcare Waste.
  • Promote effective waste management techniques across all Trust sites, providing guidance and advice in waste reduction and increase reuse / recycling where possible.
  • Developing, maintaining, implementing, and auditing Trust waste policies and procedures, including leading on waste audits.
  • Support Duty of Care visits to waste contractors in line with legal requirements.
  • Monitoring of internal waste management by routine reporting and random selection for audit.
  • Management of the Trust's reuse portal (warpit), including promotion and communication to colleagues.
  • Training staff in the correct and legal handling of all waste types and maintain records.
  • Keeping abreast of changes in legal requirements and ensure waste is dealt with accordingly.
  • Validating monthly waste invoices, ensuring they are correct and paid according to the contract.
  • Maintaining accurate monthly clinical and nonclinical waste data and providing this as annual data for the ERIC return.
  • Organising and advising on the disposal of adhoc wastes and ensure best value for money is obtained from contractors.
  • Work with the external DGSA to complete annual DGSA and preacceptance audits, following up on actions identified during these audits.
  • Support communication of operational policies and procedures to staff as necessary.
  • Provide administrative support to the team e.g. creating requisitions and ordering items from NHS Supply Chain.
Sustainability

  • Support to maintain the Trust's Energy, Waste and Sustainability intranet site and social media platforms.
  • Assisting with the communication of sustainability issues, for example drafting and sharing of the monthly Green Newsletter and ad hoc blogs for the intranet.
  • Attend training and seminars to maintain knowledge and awareness of current legislative requirements, initiatives and innovations with regards to the environment and waste management. Provide feedback to share knowledge.
  • Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of the organisation, of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislative or best practice on corporate, financial, ethical and social responsibility.
  • Promote utilities and waste efficiency across the Trust.
