Description

Sunflower House is a well-established Tier 4 children's mental health inpatient service and part of Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.


It is commissioned by NHS England to provide specialist assessment, treatment, T4 Consultation and Multi-Disciplinary opinion across Cheshire, Wirral and Merseyside but also accepts from across and outside of England where appropriate/services cannot be provided regionally.

We are an inpatient mental health facility, designed to help children and young people up to the age of 13 years with:

  • A primary diagnosis of mental illness including children with neurodevelopmental disorders (ASD and mild/borderline co-morbid learning difficulties), physical disabilities or those with social care problems as secondary needs.
  • Severe and complex needs that cannot be safely managed within Tier 3 CAMHS
  • Severe and complex needs that cannot be adequately assessed within a Tier 3 environment.
Working under defined supervision and support structures, under the direction of the senior nurse, developing and utilising basic observation, therapeutic communication and relationship skills, to support day-to-day working with complex and challenging children and their families you will carry out duties allocated by the senior nurse which will include:

  • Assisting in maintaining and developing a high standard of patient care, by demonstrating an awareness of individual needs, following defined nursing care plans and working within related policies and procedures.
  • Contributing towards effective communication by reporting to the nurse in charge any information given by a patient/relative, incident or individual observation which may affect a patient's physical or mental well-being.
  • Understanding the importance of, and maintaining the need for confidentiality in all patient matters.
  • Working as an assistant in therapeutic activities, group work and life skills with the support and guidance of senior staff.
  • Enabling young people to participate in community based activities.
  • Participating in and facilitating the maintenance of a clean, tidy and safe environment by following clearly defined health and safety guidelines.
  • Actively accessing and participating in the supervision, support and development processes which will enable further development of the range of therapeutic activities, observations and communication skills necessary for the post.

Clinical tasks:


  • Defined clinical observations of the child/young person and accurate recording of relevant information.
  • Supporting activities of selfhelp/daily living i.e. getting up/going to bed, washing, dressing, diet, etc.
  • Supporting attendance and participation in education (hospital and community).
  • Supporting attendance and participation in daily individual and group activities (hospital and community) e.g. swimming, badminton, cooking, art etc.
  • Safe and therapeutic management of challenging behaviours and/or emotional distress as per defined nursing care plans.
  • Ongoing risk assessments of patients and the environment.
  • Delivery of specified and individualised care plans.
  • Clinical incident reporting.
  • Attendance and participation in clinical supervision and support processes.
  • Specific training and utilisation of deescalation, distraction and positive behavioural support approaches including restrictive interventions.

Housekeeping tasks:


  • General clinical filing.
  • Identifying and reporting of repairs.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and tidying of unit environment.
  • Bed making and room tidying.
  • Keeping storage areas clean, tidy and safe.
  • Assisting in the opening and closure of unit where necessary.
  • Ordering of stock items in relation to patient care.
