Visiting Lecturers in Environmental Management - Personal Tutors (Hourly Paid)

Rate of pay:

Full duty £39.01 per hour, plus 17.66% accrued holiday per total value
Working hours: Variable
Duration of contract: Permanent The appointments will focus around providing advice on academic and non-academic matters, encouraging student engagement, to mentor and guide a group of students in their personal and professional development, academic progress and goals and supporting their wellbeing and sense of belonging.

It is expected this is about signposting and referring students to the appropriate resources in the School and across the University.- Meetings will be held with tutees on a regular basis, preferably on the University's College Lane campus in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.

The Personal Tutor will monitor Tutees progress (training will be provided) as part of their meetings. This data will provide the underpinning for prioritising the meetings by focusing first on at risk students. Personal Tutors will also maintain a database of meetings with their students.- In their support of each Tutee's academic, personal and professional development, Academic Progress and well-being, Personal Tutors will be responsible for;- Providing support and guidance on overall, programme level academic performance

  • Supporting personal development and career planning
  • Discussing feedback and providing guidance on how to improve
  • Assisting Tutees in their understanding of UH regulations, policies and procedures
  • Fostering the development of students' reflective skills and independent learning
  • Referring Tutees to specialist support services where appropriate
  • Responding promptly to communication from Tutees
  • Providing references on request
  • Identify Students at Risk (of failing year or withdrawing) and develop an intervention and recovery plan with the Programme Lead.
  • Our MSc programme is accredited by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

    Skills/Qualifications Required:
  • PhD in a cognate area, or have equivalent demonstrable practitioner experience which may include appropriate certification and/or membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Exceptional knowledge of core areas of teaching in the relevant field. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or a similar teaching/training qualification) is also desirable.
  • Experience of teaching or training in the relevant field(s), providing academic guidance, mentoring and pastoral care to students or trainees, and marking assessments in Higher Education or a professional setting, with positive feedback gained.
  • Experience with online learning environments is also desirable.
  • Personal Tutors must be friendly, approachable, supportive and accessible. They will not solve their Tutees' problems, as they want students to develop their ability to do this independently but will listen attentively before helping explore the options they have for overcoming any issues and support and refer Tutees to specialist support services where appropriate.
