Mersey Care is the lead provider for Cheshire and Merseyside Acute COVID treatment service in primary care, which has been operational since December 2021.


The service aims to support extremely vulnerable eligible patients in the community who have contracted Covid but do not require hospitalisation and may benefit from anti-viral treatment.

To date, the service has treated over 5,000 patients with excellent clinical outcomes and mínimal requirement for hospitalization.


Patients are initially assessed for suitability for treatment by CMDU triage team, and eligible patients are referred to the prescribing team for assessment and treatment.

Treatment is provided across C&M, close to the patient's home. Patients are assessed by telephone consultation and then prescribed appropriate therapy if required as per national CMDU clinical protocol.

The timing of the shifts may be arranged flexibly to suit the availability of individual prescribers. Full training will be provided to carry out this role.

  • Discuss different antiviral, IV and other treatment options with eligible patients
  • Explain to patients the pros and cons of different treatments and prescription of medications as appropriate
  • Review recent blood results of the patients to confirm the eligibility for Paxlovid
  • Liaise with local hospital pharmacists for medication review for prescription of Paxlovid
  • Liaise with Mersey Care CMDU team to facilitate patient treatment
  • Undertake respective prescriptions to local hospitals +/
  • IV teams as appropriate
  • Prioritise the prescriptions according to case type and time frame for the treatment (Day 17)
  • Liaising with CMDU to advise alternative treatment /monitoring options for unsuitable patients if required.
  • Manage daily prescribing case load of CMDU via EMIS and participate in virtual MDT discussions if required.

As an autonomous practitioner the post holder will have an advanced clinical role with responsibility for assessing, planning, managing, and coordinating the care of people, in the Covid Medicines Delivery Unit (CMDU) with highly complex needs and long-term conditions within a defined caseload.

The practitioner will provide comprehensive holistic care sensitive to the needs of the population using advanced clinical skills and case management techniques to reduce unplanned hospital admissions.

The post holder will be a key enabler in meeting the Mersey Care Foundation Trusts strategic agenda.

They will have enhanced/advanced skills, knowledge and competencies in non-medical prescribing, critical thinking, history taking, clinical examination, diagnostic skills, case management, long-term condition management, frailty, and acute episode management with the ability to relate theory to practice.


The post holder will provide clinical leadership, professional role modelling, mentorship, supervision, education, and clinical expertise as an independent and interdependent practitioner, developing and leading relationships within the integrated nursing teams and integrated care teams.

The post-holder must be educated to MSc degree level in Advanced Clinical Practice or have equivalent qualifications and experience.
