The NHS Newborn Hearing Screening programme aims to identify moderate, severe and profound deafness and hearing impairment in newborn babies.

Early identification of hearing impairment gives children a better chance of developing speech and language skills, and of making the most of social and emotional interaction from an early age.


The purpose of this role is to work as a member of the team participating in the hearing screening of newborn babies, under the supervision of the Hearing Screening Manager.

As a newborn hearing screener you will have direct handling of newborn babies and contact with parents.

You will be required to perform hearing screens on newborn babies using automated equipment, record and collect data and liaise with parents and other professionals.

The post holder will ensure all parents of eligible babies are offered the screen in a timely fashion and that the screen is carried out according to the national and local standards.


If you are not already a trained Newborn Hearing Screener, you would need to commit to obtaining a Level 3 Health Screener Diploma within 18 months (fully paid for by the service).

This qualification is compulsory for staff new to Newborn Hearing Screening and requires work in the employee's own time for a period of 9-12 months.

Upon completion you are required tostay in post for 24 months.


As a newborn hearing screener you will ensure all parents of eligible babies are offered the screen in a timely fashion and that the screen is carried out on them before the age of three months according to the national and local standards.

You will gather and accurately record clinical and test data relevant to the screening process and inform parents of the results of tests in a professional and caring way.

You will maintain confidentiality of the babies and their families at all times and be aware of child protection issues and adhere to local procedures.

You will promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment endorsing a family friendly approach to care ensuring patients and families retain their dignity, privacy and individuality.

You will maintain effective communication with parents, maternity staff, audiology team and other relevant staff and professionals ensuring that appropriate action is taken regarding referral to other departments such as Paediatric Audiology.

You will adhere to protocols and policies around equipment regulations and IT systems as specified by National programme and ensure accurate recording and archiving of results and outcome on S4H.

You will maintain up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to this post and ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times reporting any problems to the Hearing Screening manager at the earliest opportunity.

Communicate with and provide information for parents concerning hearing screening - obtain parental consent.

To carry out the hearing screening of all Newborn babies within the cohort for the hospital trust.

To inform parents of the screening outcome as dictated by Local and national Hearing Screening programme (NHSP) protocols.

Record clinical and test data accurately and ensure a timely transfer of information to the manager.

Be aware of child protection issues and adhere to local policies and procedures.

Maintain up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to the post.

Ensure safety and security of equipment at all times and report any problems to the hearing Screener Manager at the earliest opportunity

Carry out daily calibration checks on equipment.


Discuss screening outcomes with Antenatal and Newborn screening Coordinator, Midwife in charge and where applicable Audiology Department, and enter accurate results into babies' records.

Check maternal/baby records, to assess babies requiring targeted follow ups.

Assist with general administration duties for the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Team.

Screen babies on the Special Care Baby Unit.
