Description

The Pathology Support Service is looking to recruit a focused, methodical and self-motivated Clerical/Stores Person to join our team at Worthing Hospital.


The post holder will provide a point of contact for the delivery and receipt of, laboratory goods and patient samples/specimens for Pathology.


To provide timely delivery of specimens, goods and consumables to each of the individual departments so as to assist the Biomedical Scientists, who provide a specialised diagnostic Pathology service contributing to the clinical care of patients.

To provide a point of contact for patients and staff for the collection of laboratory specimens and consumable items.


To maintain the order of the Pathology store and participate in stock management including stock control, stock audit and ordering as required.


Full training will be provided for the laboratory computer system, stock ordering system and the Trust PAS computer system where appropriate.


The post holder will also be instructed in the operation of any laboratory or stores equipment that they may be asked to operate according to current laboratory safety guidelines.


The individual will be expected to develop judgement and utilise learnt specialist skills to assist in the provision of a high quality and timely Pathology service.

  • To receive specimens from patients, GP's, wards and clinics
  • To record time and date of arrival of all specimens delivered to the Pathology Specimen Reception area and maintain a driver delivery record for GP surgery deliveries.
  • To use all sample receipt and delivery audit systems, as required, to ensure ongoing quality standards are met.
  • To sort and distribute the specimens to the appropriate laboratories in a timely and efficient manner.
  • To maintain sufficient levels of consumable items within the Specimen Reception Area and Pathology store.
  • To supply Wards, clinics and GP surgeries with consumable items. To operate the Air Tube System and alert Line manager of faults. This device is used to send samples around the hospital.
  • To maintain high standards of cleanliness, health and safety at all times within the Specimen Reception Area.
  • To receive deliveries as and when required, then move the goods to the relevant store area, seeking assistance as necessary for handling heavy or bulky goods observing good lifting practice at all times.
  • Advise the relevant Department of the arrival of new orders and ensure those marked with special instructions such as refrigerate on receipt etc. are brought to the immediate attention of a Senior BMS.
  • To maintain stock control sheets and advise the relevant Patient & Specimen Reception Manager when restock level triggers are met.
  • To provide monthly stock checks as agreed with Patient & Specimen Reception Manager and the Pathology Support Services Manager, providing documented information as appropriate.
  • To maintain high standards of order, cleanliness, health and safety at all times within the Pathology Reception and Store Areas.
  • To participate in the annual stock take and any adhoc audit processes.
  • To remove laboratory waste when requested and take to the relevant holding area for disposal.
  • To adhere at all times to the processes and procedures applied to the areas of activity.
  • To perform Clerical Duties, and meet and great patients as and when required
