About the Role**:


We have an exciting opportunity to join a creative and enigmatic department as an Academic Mentor and work with students to enable them to achieve their full potential in English and progress to appropriate and exciting destinations.


Key Duties:


  • To organise and deliver advice and resources to students that help them achieve their educational, professional and/or personal goals.
  • Prepare individual intervention plans for focus students in conjunction with the Head of English
  • Run before school, afterschool and lunch time study support and independent learning sessions for students
  • Liaise with Heads of English and students in need of support
  • Conduct interviews with students to identify barriers to learning
  • Provide inclass support for underachieving Pupil Premium students
  • Analyse student data in order to monitor the progress of identified individuals and report to the Head of Faculty on the impact of the intervention using DDI
  • Ongoing communication with Head of English and Year 11 pastoral staff
  • Complete case studies for selected students
  • Attend Raising Achievement meetings and produce reports for these meetings
  • Regular contact with parents and carers regarding pupils progress and achievement in English.

About the school:

Darwen Vale High School is an 11-16 academy situated in the heart of Darwen. We opened in brand new buildings in September 2012 and over the last two years have grown from year groups of 150 to 240 and anticipate that within the next three years we will be a full school of over 1,200 students

DVHS has been recognised as a rapidly improving school. Our academic standards have improved dramatically. English results have improved to 75% at Grade 4 in 2019 which was above the National average.

Maths results improved by over 20% in 2019 when students last sat GCSE examinations resulting in 70% gaining grade 4 or better and 50% gaining grade 5 or better.

Combined English and Maths results were 47% for grade 5 in 2019 and 64% for grade 4.

Our teacher assessed grades for 2020 and 2021 indicate a continued pattern of improvement with improved outcomes in all curriculum areas.
