Description

We are an ambitious council keen to build on our strong track record of innovation and partnership working, ensuring that we enable everyone in our communities to thrive.

Key to this is a committed workforce who always gives their best. Offering a fast paced, progressive working environment, Gateshead Council is a great career move.

The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) is a team of dedicated teachers and bilingual specialist staff with significant experience of working with schools, community groups and other partners.

They work to support schools in raising the attainment of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and Gypsy, Roma and Travellers (GRT) pupils, including refugee and asylum seeker pupils.

We are looking to appoint two Higher Level Teaching Assistants to join our highly respected Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service.

You will work with pupils, families, and staff to support the successful integration of gypsy, Roma and traveller and other ethnic minority backgrounds across Gateshead.

You will also support the work of the wider ethnic minority and traveller service.

You will have knowledge of EAL pedagogy, and an understanding of EAL assessment systems including the role of EMTAS. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also essential.

You will have EAL and meet the Higher-Level Teaching Assistant standards or hold an equivalent qualification to level 4. You will hold a current driving license and have access to a car or mobility support.

You will have experience of teaching and supporting children from ethnic minority and traveller backgrounds. Experience of working with ethnic minority families and communities is also essential.

Some of the key elements of this post include:
Providing appropriate pastoral support and educational support to gypsy, Roma and traveller children and those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Helping children settle into the school routines and helping parents understand school rules and routines.

Liaising with parents regarding issues linked to education and supporting schools in communicating with parents and parent's communication with school.

Working either within the classroom, within small groups or on a one-to-one basis with children from gypsy, Roma, traveller community and those that fall under the wider EMTAS service.

When appropriate develop pupils' competence in English for both social and academic purposes.

We have many reasons to be proud of our existing service for gypsy, Roma and traveller and other ethnic minority backgrounds across Gateshead but are keen to strengthen and develop this offer.

If you share the ethos of Gateshead's Children's Social Care and Lifelong Learning, this could be the opportunity you are looking for.
