The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the '

Book Forgery:
History, Practice, and Detection' project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

The post will ideally run from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024.


The project is led by Dr Joseph Hone in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University.

The project began in July 2023, and will run until December 2024. Its aims are twofold.

Firstly, to produce new understandings of how rare and desirable books have been forged, counterfeited, and sophisticated over the last four hundred years; and, secondly, to investigate how forgeries have shaped the development of bibliography as a scholarly discipline.

The objective is to use historical inquiry to formulate productive strategies for the detection of suspect items today and into the future.

Key Accountabilities
To conduct primary research on fakes and forgeries in libraries and archives, in relation to broader issues of library security
To write a journal article based on this research for an audience of library and archives professionals
To present on aspects of the project at relevant conferences and seminars
To support the PI in developing a practical study day on fakes and forgeries

Research interests which demonstrably align with the project and the specific responsibilities of the position
Excellent organisational abilities and time management skills, and ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines
Excellent oral and written communication skills with a range of different audiences

Attributes and Behaviour
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Willingness and ability to engage with both academic and non-academic audiences and partners


Qualifications:

Doctorate in book history or a related field (or equivalent experience)
