If you have highly effective secretarial and organisational skills there is a wonderful opportunity to join the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Orthodontic Department as a Medical Secretary.


We are looking for an experienced, friendly and above all enthusiastic full-time Medical Secretary to join our fabulous team in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Orthodontics at the Royal United Hospital in Bath working for 37.5 hours per week.

We would love an exceptionally self-motivated individual who is well organised and has excellent communication skills. You should be flexible and used to working under pressure and able to meet tight deadlines. The successful applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook and audio typing. Medical secretarial experience is preferred although training can be given.

We are looking for an effective team player with a flexible approach who can plan and organise their workload, prioritising as required.


You should have a good standard of general education - educated to GCSE level or above and demonstrate a good standard of English.

Previous experience in the NHS would be an asset.


  • To provide a complete medical secretarial service including word processing, filing(including ward round filing), audio typing, photocopying and the composition of letters. To provide a fast and accurate copy and audio typing service to the department, producing clinic letters and other documents.
  • Preparing and organising papers for meetings, attending and taking notes when necessary.
  • To liaise with Nurses, Doctors and other members of the multi - disciplinary team including Inpatient & Outpatient Bookings teams to provide a quality service for the patients.
  • To provide a first point of contact, answering all telephone inquiries, taking and relaying messages in a polite and helpful manner, and using own judgement to establish the priority of issues and taking action as appropriate. To keep database of follow up appointments and to make timely appointments.
  • To deal with incoming correspondence, using initiative as appropriate.
  • To develop and maintain computerised and manual filing systems.
  • To make best use of information technology, i.e. Windows Software and to be involved with the changing technology as this becomes available.
  • Collection and inputting of referral to treatment data (RTT) and input on to database.
  • To assist in the fast track treatment for patients with cancer.
  • To provide secretarial cover across the directorate.
  • To ensure that all relevant parties are informed of any leave to be taken by their Consultant and relevant team.
