Job summary:


The collocated Royal Marines School of Music (RMSoM) and Royal Military School of Music (RMSM), collectively known as the Alford Schools of Military Music (ASMM), selects, trains, and examines musicians and buglers of the highest quality in order to maintain musical excellence within the Royal Navy and Army.

The Vocal Professor of Music is responsible for providing professional tuition to both individuals and ensembles to meet training requirements of each single service school.

This position is advertised at 36 hours per week.


Job description:


  • To deliver individual vocal tuition to RM and Army trainees as required, in accordance with RMSoM/RMSM LSpecs and Assessment Manuals.
  • To coach and advise individual trainees for recitals, formative, and summative assessments.
  • To work with the relevant instructors to monitor and maximise trainee progress.
  • To assess trainees and provide written reports as required by RMSoM/RMSM.
  • To examine potential RM recruits during the audition process, up to four times per year.
  • To voice test and select vocalists from within the trainee population.
- maintain an active role in the development of training at the ASMM, in liaison with DoMT/CI.

  • To approve SQ3/CQ3 programme proposals in liaison with Course Leaders (BdmrT/SI ITT), in accordance with Training Orders.
  • To advise DOMT/CI on possible master classes that may enhance the development of the recruits.
  • To undertake any mandated training identified in the Work Induction Programme (WiP) and in accordance with MOD requirements.

RM Band Service Only

To provide through career support to all auxiliary vocalists for the wider RMBS, to build and sustain a vocal capability

Provide advice on vocal repertoire and performance to HQ RM Band Service

To support and coach RMBS vocalists for and during high profile commitments including MFM and Massed Bands concert tours.

Person specification:


  • A resume of the applicant's career in professional music performance and/or teaching will be required. Although formal qualifications are not mandatory, it is preferable for any applicant to show a level of experience, technique and skill commensurate with Post Graduate level.
