Introduction
A1 Clerks are recruited to band rather than post.

If you are successful, you will join a pool of Clerks and will move from time to time between different roles in the Select Committee Team and the Chamber and Participation Team.

The Role

Select Committees work in different ways, and you will choose approaches and methods appropriate to their topics of inquiry and ways of working.

As a Team Leader in the
Select Committee Team you will build on your existing skills and be supported through training, advice and collaborative working with colleagues to deliver the Committee's agreed work programme.

In the
Chamber and Participation Team, you would receive support and training to take on the role of a senior member of staff (and sometimes acting Head of Office)
in one of the procedural offices listed above, giving advice on parliamentary practice and procedure to Members.

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to motivate teams and manage people inclusively, helping staff to develop their skills, proactively addressing underperformance and delegating effectively. Models and promotes the House's values, including a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Translates aims into practical objectives, managing priorities and workloads within available resources and in line with strategic priorities. Devises pragmatic solutions to complex problems. Anticipates the needs of senior and other stakeholders, devising innovative ways of delivering better services, and sees ideas through to delivery.
  • Builds and maintains good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, including delivering difficult messages to senior stakeholders when necessary.
  • Communicates complex issues clearly, concisely and in a way that is appropriate to senior audiences, whether orally or in writing. Able to represent the House administration and its values to external audiences, including the wider public. Edits the work of others to ensure clarity and accuracy.
