Description

We are looking for someone to lead a team of five within the Ministerial Strategy Directorate in the Department for International Trade, leading on Honours and Public Appointments strategy and delivery.


The person in this role will also take on project work on behalf of the wider governance function and sometimes wider Ministerial Strategy Directorate.


Job description

  • Take pride in directing a high performing team with a culture of exceptional customer service and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and utilise internal and external relationships with stakeholders to support the Departments Honours and Appointments functions.
  • Manage relationships with internal policy and sponsor teams, providing an advisory function for senior appointments and oversight for Non-Executive Board Members recruitment for the Departmental Board and its Committees.
  • Provide detailed timely highquality advice directly to Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, Honours Committee members and senior officials demonstrating sensible judgement about sensitive matters while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Manage an ongoing programme of delivery, with contending priorities, anticipating and acting quickly to escalate issues appropriately and to mitigate risk to the delivery of effective honours committees and senior level appointments.
  • Draw together and evaluate information and data to support effective evidencebased decisionmaking relating to honours nominations and appointments processes.

Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Essential Criteria

  • Be able to take the initiative, plan and prioritise an ongoing programme of work across competing areas and demands, and achieve testing goals at pace.
  • Have strong communication, customer service and relationship management skills and the selfassurance to lead on briefing Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, and Honours Committees.
  • Experience in drafting wellstructured and clear written information, including interpretation and use of data, at pace, strong attention to detail and a problemsolving mindset.
  • Use sound judgement to know when to engage in developing risks and opportunities, bringing matters to the attention of the Deputy Director, Ministers and Permanent Secretary where appropriate.
  • Ability to network with officials across the Department, keeping them engaged and bought into the appointments and honours processes as necessary.
