We are looking for a talented and experienced Virologist to join our Virology and Pathogenesis (V&P) research group.
As a Virologist, you will take part in and lead projects to work with an increasing range of emerging viruses.
You will work closely with the Scientific Leader and Head of Department to consolidate science around the role of the WHO CC, maintaining attention to assay requirements where no commercial tests exist.
You will also contribute to the group's educational remit, supporting molecular virology and working across multidisciplinary teams within V&P, the Rare and Imported Pathogens laboratory (RIPL), and other national and international institutes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and participate in projects to work with an increasing range of emerging viruses.
- Consolidate science around the role of the WHO CC, maintaining attention to assay requirements where no commercial tests exist.
- Contribute to the group's educational remit, supporting molecular virology and working across multidisciplinary teams within V&P, the Rare and Imported Pathogens laboratory (RIPL), and other national and international institutes.
- Work closely with the Scientific Leader, Head of Department, and other Senior Project Team Leaders to develop the capability in V&P and obtain further external funding, develop academic links and expertise of the group.
Requirements:
- PhD in Virology or a related field.
- Experience in working with an increasing range of emerging viruses.
- Experience in molecular virology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

Job description:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Work with the Scientific Lead and other senior group members to consolidate virology associated with the WHO CC and the groups educational training remit
- Lead and develop molecular and recombinant virologybased projects to ensure targets are met, and staff are trained
- Lead and develop capacity building collaborations to ensure project targets are met, working with the Scientific Lead to maintain the engagement of stakeholders
- Lead on other externally funded projects as assigned, meeting targets in line with sponsor requirements, engaging with collaborators and networks as required
- Identify, bid and lead on internal and external funding with a molecular/recombinant virology focus, or other complementary group activities to maintain capability and develop the group in line with VPPC core objectives
- Work with Scientific Lead/Head of Department to coordinate logistics and work of visiting scientists, including postgraduate and undergraduate trainee scientists for necessary periods.
- Provide reports and data as required by the Scientific Lead/Head of Department and external stakeholders as required
- To build external links with collaborators and similar groups to the benefit of VPPC and UKHSA
- To give internal/external presentations, develop, draft, and submit manuscripts on work for peerreviewed publications
- Lead the project team/area: identify, evaluate, and adapt new approaches where appropriate and to ensure that projects operate to a high scientific standard using current methods
- Provide line and project management as required and indicated by Head of Department and Scientific Lead
