Salary:
£39,748

Plus a recruitment and retention allowance of up to £4,000 per annum

Full time/Part Time (minimum of 25 hours a week)

The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides large-scale computing facilities, computing data services and infrastructure at both Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

Made up of data infrastructure, andscientific computing and computation groups, the expertise and intelligence SCD provides UKRI, underpins almost every key calculation across STFC and beyond.


Currently we are seeking two Senior Software Engineers to join our DAaaS (Data Analysis as a Service) Group within the Scientific Computing Department.

DAaaS is a cloud-based data analysis platform to enable scientists to access a virtual environment poweredby the STFC Cloud.

DAaaS has supported scientists in STFC and our collaborators around the world to conduct data analysis related to research in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and more.

About the role:_

Working with customers to form technical solutions of data analysis on compute, software and data
Software development from requirements to production
Review code and provide feedback to ensure best practice, such as quality, testability, performance etc.
Plan and implement new release and maintenance, following the roadmap of DAaaS platform.
Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.

Support DAaaS platform and deal with system issues and debug/track/resolve by analysing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.

Proactively identify technical solutions to improve reliability and scalability.
Work with colleagues from different groups within the Scientific Computing Department, to improve DAaaS service.

We are looking for:_

Excellent software development and delivery experience in Python
Good understanding of microservices architectures
Experience with cloud platform, e.g. OpenStack or AWS
Experience of Linux OS, Git and software containers and virtualisation
Experience of full software development lifecycle and agile methodologies
