The Clinical Fellow will be part of a consultant led multidisciplinary team with responsibility for the provision of services for Inherited Metabolic Disorders

(IMD). This provision will include outpatient clinics at the base and liaison with other agencies and outreach services.

There is team-based assessment of patients effected by IMD ranging from acute presenting disorders to slowly progressive disorders.

The post holder will gain experience in dietary management and pharmacotherapy (including enzyme replacement therapy), with exposure to diagnostic and monitoring biochemical techniques, genetic counselling, physiotherapeutic and the psychosocial needs of these patients.


The appointee will join a medical team, consisting of four Metabolic Medicine Consultants, a clinical fellow/ specialist registrar working within the wider multidisciplinary service of an advanced practitioner, specialist dietitians, nurses, pharmacy, physiotherapy and research staff.

The team is supported managerially by a Support Manager, Lead Manager, Senior Service Manager and Clinical Director.

The nature of the work will include assessment, and provision of a range of clinical treatments and care covering the spectrum of Inherited Metabolic Disorders.

Contribute to the delivery of the Adult IMD clinical service including:

  • Contribute to outpatient clinics with the multidisciplinary team including transition and outreach clinics
  • Working with other healthcare professionals, specialties and services to provide safe continuous inpatient and outpatient care for IMD patients
  • Undertake clinical administrative activity required for patient care and continuity.
  • Undertake continuing medical education and teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate professionals
  • Undertake service evaluation, audit and clinical governance activity within the department
  • Undertake and support the delivery of research activities within the unit
