South Central Ambulance Service are looking to recruit several Ambulance Assistant call taker to join our teams that are based at our Bicester site in Oxfordshire.


As an Ambulance Assistant Emergency Call Taker, you will be answering and managing calls from Health care Professionals such as GPs, hospital clinicians and Midwives who have assessed their patients and need us to convey them to hospital or other health care facilities.

Roles and responsibilities of an Assistant Emergency Call Taker include:

  • Answer and mange calls from Health Care Professionals
  • Provide all callers with appropriate prearrival instructions.
  • To operate telephony equipment specific to role.
  • Competent in the use of IT systems
  • GCSE grades 49 or equivalent in Maths and English
  • Customer service experience from a telephone or face to face role
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to listen and record information accurately
  • Ability to remain calm whilst working in a pressurised environment
  • Attention to detail and accurate data entry skills

We are now offering a generous recruitment and retention bonus.

A £200 bonus will be paid once you successfully complete the 3-week initial classroom training.


An extra £300 bonus will be paid when you've been successfully signed off after your coaching and mentoring period (roughly 3 months after the classroom training).


A further £700 bonus will be paid when you've completed your probationary period (generally 6 months after coaching sign-off but in some circumstances this can be extended).

(The bonuses above are for full-time contracts and those on part-time contracts will receive a percentage of the maximum bonus e.g. for a 24 hour per week contract the first bonus would be £128. The second bonus would be £192. The final bonus would be £448).
