Your role and responsibilities

Be part of one of the UK's leading small animal referral centres


Applications from highly motivated and ambitious colleagues are invited to undertake a Residency Training Programme in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, commencing in the spring of 2023.

Willows' Anaesthesia team provides a comprehensive anaesthesia and analgesia service to referral patients from practices across the UK.

Willows is a truly multi-disciplinary centre with Specialists across Soft Tissue Surgery, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, Internal Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Clinical Nutrition and ECC.


Facilities at Willows are second to none, including:

  • State of the art anaesthetic monitoring equipment
  • Dedicated anaesthesia Sonosite ultrasound machine
  • Pain clinic, Electroacupuncture and Klaser machines
  • Varied surgical case load including thoracoscopy and laparoscopy, craniotomy, cardiac surgeries, and intrahepatic liver shunts
  • Dedicated ECC specialistrun intensive care unit
  • Extensive imaging facilities including 1.5T MRI, 64 slice Siemens CT, ultrasound, digital Xray, fluoroscopy and endoscopy
  • Interventional cardiology, radiology and endoscopic procedures
  • Radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism and thyroid carcinoma

The Anaesthesia team have broad clinical experience with particular interests in anaesthesia for the critically ill patient, cardiac procedures and ultrasound guided local blocks.


Scope of role


You will be expected to work closely with the directors, clinical colleagues, the practice manager, nurse and reception managers as well as all other support staff within the practice in order to provide the highest standards of professional care and service for our referred clients and their animals.


Key responsibilities

  • Provision of clinical and professional services for referred clients in accordance with our 'Veterinary Surgeon's Guidance Notes' and the instructions of the directors.
  • Participation in rotas, including 'out of hours' service in accordance with the practice requirements.
  • Training towards and fulfilling the requirements of the European Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and producing the required publications within the deadlines set.

Key personal attributes
To be at least two years qualified and to have spent at least one year in primary care practice.

To have undertaken a rotating Internship or have equivalent previous experience along with a proven track record in managing Anaesthesia cases

To maintain a professional approach and appearance at all times.


To demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and a positive friendly attitude are essential for effective teamwork within the practice, together with the ability to make decisions and communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues at all levels.

To demonstrate a commitment to practising the highest standard of veterinary medicine


Key clinical and administrative tasks

  • Be available during working hours to sedate and anaesthetise patients, care and provide analgesia plans for inpatients, stabilise and if necessary investigate clinical cases, support and teach clinical staff
  • Read, understand and implement the practice's current clinical, operational and commercial policies.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional behaviour in accordance with the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct.
  • Do nothing which might prejudice the good name of the practice in the eyes of the public or the veterinary profession.
  • Develop a rapport with clinicians and support staff, perform physical examinations and anaesthesia for diagnostic/medical/surgical/interventional procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care whilst minimising patient stress and discomfort; recommend referral to other Willows' specialists if appropriate.
  • Maintain excellent patient/surgical/medical records and make certain all necessary information is kept up to date through established protocols; assist colleagues in follow up and future management of the patient.
  • Establish a good rapport with referring veterinary surgeons including: timely professional and respectful communication; assistance in their professional growth and education through recommendations and interaction on referred and shared cases; ongoing development of a positive and professional working relationship; participation in Continuing Professional Development involving the local referral community.
  • Take primary case responsibility under the supervision of Anaesthesia Specialists, following an initial personalised training period.
  • Participate in residents, anaesthesia teaching rounds and journal clubs.
  • Attend relevant CPD courses both in the UK and overseas.
