This role as Senior Practitioner for Widening Participation is to lead and develop employability opportunities to attract and retain our current and future workforce.

They will be expected to lead, create and implement a range of Widening Participation projects to support strategic workforce planning across the organisation and on occasion to support the wider NHS system.


The post holder will be responsible for leading with Widening Participation team to support the development of efficient and effective programmes, activities and projects to support our organisational Widening Participation strategy and aspirations within our Community Promise and Corporate Social Responsibility agenda.


It is essential that the post holder role models compassionate and inclusive leadership by engaging, enabling, and empowering others; using coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement; and facilitating team working and collaboration across organisational boundaries.


This post is hosted, and be based with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, having a reach across the wider geographical boundaries of the North East and North Cumbria.


The main duties of this role is to:

  • To provide and support the best development opportunities for our people and communities.
  • To source and manage the funding, promotion, procurement, and Implementation of a range of people development projects, supporting widening participation.
  • To ensure the provision and coordination of efficient and effective programmes, activities, and projects to support the organisations strategy and aspirations to attract and retain people.
  • To contribute to the formulation, agreement and delivery of widening participation and development strategies by providing a highquality people development service for the organization and wider community.


We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England.

We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres.

We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate.

The main expectations and responsibilities for the role include:

  • Highly developed specialist knowledge across work procedures, underpinned by theory and experience.
  • Project management qualification and/or experience to coordinate a wide range of people development projects and programs.
  • Leadership and Management qualification and/or experience
  • Knowledge of education and people development good practice gained from previous experience of working in a similar environment.
  • Willingness to engage in continuous professional development to enhance the service and career aspirations.
  • Specialist knowledge in the development and delivery of people development activities and widening participation, gained through experience in an education, similar environment.
  • Skills to project manage the delivery of an innovative and forwardthinking people development and widening participation activities to support the organisations strategic priorities.
  • Skills and experience in leadership and management.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and engage others.
  • Holds a valid driving license and is either a car owner or able to use a car for work purposes.

It is also essential that the post holder can:

  • Required to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information to ensure that the appropriate agreement or co-operation required to deliver projects is achieved. This information is used to develop project plans and associated documentation and for planning and monitoring.
  • Persuades boards, teams and staff of the importance of complex projects; negotiates with and motivates staff on project delivery, including linking in with other initiatives.
  • Complex facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation, comparison of a range of options
  • The analytical skills required with project management, such as the appraisal of resources, the interpretation of project impact and a thorough evaluation of projects.
  • Coordinates activities and projects requiring analysis and interpretation. Making judgements or escalating matters as and when required.
