At Leonardo, we have a great opportunity within our Procurement Function for a Senior Subcontract Buyer.

The main purpose of this Senior Subcontract Buyer role is to provide core Procurement and Strategic Supplier Account Management to Leonardo from within cross-functional Integrated Project Teams (IPTs).

As part the IPT, you will be involved with a wide breath of supplier engagements from assessment and down-select through subcontract and purchase order award to delivery and acceptance.

The role will be responsible for ensuring the suppliers meet the terms of their sub-contracts and order commitments, whilst ensuring adherence to internal and external governance and legislation on behalf of the Procurement Function, such as Trade and Export Compliance.


  • Provide Procurement governance and support to IPTs and business areas both internally for effective Life Cycle Management (Tender Vet, Phase Reviews, Project Performance Review etc.) and externally acting as a point of liaison with the supply chain to achieve delivery and margin for all associated projects.
  • On-Boarding Supplier selection, development and ongoing surveillance of strategic suppliers/partners in conjunction with category and supply chain areas. Ownership and responsibility for supplier performance, relationships and the 'material' budget.
  • Development of strategic Suppliers and Partners. Regular off site supplier meetings, both in domestic and overseas. Focused on supplier performance and improvement against KPIs.
  • Ongoing monitoring and surveillance of overall Supplier performance, not limited to delivery, cost and quality aspects. Ownership and responsibility for Supplier performance, relationships and the 'material' budget.
  • Crossfunctional input into IPT teams. Adopting the role of IPT Procurement lead for allocated IPTs and programs, providing crossfunctional input as required.
  • Supporting the implementation of Requests for Quotation, Subcontracts, Non-Disclosure Agreements, Statements of Work, Pricing and Framework Agreements as required whilst ensuring that the Company is always fully protected commercially and flow downs have been incorporated appropriately and in line with contractual and legislative requirement, ensuring that the responsibilities are fully conveyed through the Supply Chain. Ensure suppliers have understood the required work packages and commitments.
  • Define Procurement Plans for projects and IPTs as required in line with functional governance to ensure all requirements are understood and risks mitigated.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required:

  • Procurement professional with a reasonable level of exposure at an appropriate level in the Defence or equivalent compliance driven industry.
  • Minimum of two 'A' Levels or equivalent.
  • CIPS, Management, Engineering and or Project Management qualifications are desirable.
  • Direct Supplier Management background essential.
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex Terms and Conditions is desirable.
  • Defence contracting with knowledge of UK MoD DEFCONS and US FARS and DFARS and associated flow downs is desirable.
  • Creation and implementation of commercial documents. Risk management. Supplier assessment/Due Diligence.
  • TAA/ITAR export controls. With good grounding on Trade Compliance.
  • Supply Chain management skills including ownership of strategic accounts and complex order book management.

This is largely an office-based role using display screen equipment, working full time hours which can be in a demanding environment, with some travel throughout the UK and occasional abroad.
