You will support the Woodland Officer in the effective management, maintenance, conservation, protection and improvement of the Company's forests and woodlands throughout the Lancashire and Greater Manchester area, in order to safeguard water quality, protect habitats and ecosystems, provide amenity & enhance reputation.

You'll contribute to the implementation of forest design and management plans for the West area Catchment estate, which should include regular inspection, monitoring and identification of infrastructure deficiencies and dangerous damaged or dead trees and maintenance plans in line with the UKWAS (United Kingdom Woodland Assurance Scheme) and maintenance of Forest Certification


Job Accountabilities:

Responsible for representing United Utilities at meeting with Local Authorities, Utility companies, contractors etc. ensuring that the Company's interests are protected and the Company's reputation is enhanced.

You will carry out accurate surveying and mensuration of sites and crops prior to the letting of contracts and sales of produce, monitor works in progress and provide an accurate measurement of completed works to allow payment to be made to Contractors.


Responsibilities also include:

  • Directing and monitoring Company employees, contractors, timber merchants and other persons working on trees and woodlands on the Company's estates, ensuring that contract specifications are adhered to and the work is completed to an agreed standard.
  • Ensuring that any contractors employed by the Company on tree or woodland works, carry out work in a safe manner and to provide and receive risk assessment and method statements for all proposed works within requirements of Health & Safety legislation and Company policy & procedures.
  • Inspecting and reporting on the condition of specific areas of woodland as directed by the Woodland Officer, including the condition of boundary fences and walls, drains and ditches, access roads, standing trees and damaged, dead or diseased trees.
  • Identifying and investigating any items of concern or proposals for improvement in connection with existing woodlands or new sites, and recommend solutions for discussion with the Woodland Officer to facilitate the continuing maintenance and improvement of the Company's woodland asset.
  • Inspecting and reporting on the condition of trees and woodlands, identifying any future thinning, felling, maintenance work and recommended remedial actions for other UU departments, Tenants or external customers.
  • Supporting the Woodland Officer in the day to day management of the Company's woodland including:
  • Carrying out minor remedial works and emergency repairs as directed by the Woodland Officer.
  • Assessment of thinning densities and extraction systems routes, undertake marking and mensuration for timber sales, records and work programmes
  • Dealing with trade and retail customers
  • Ensuring the security of forest produce throughout contracts from felling to point of sale

Knowledge and Skills:


To be successful in this role you'll need to hold HNC Forestry or an equivalent qualification and have significant experience in a practical and technical capacity managing woodland and forests together with a range of contract management.


  • A Good understanding of modern Forestry strategy and practice, health and safety in forestry and England Forest Strategy
  • Excellent communication and teamworking skills
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Experience of contract project management
  • Experience of GIS, Mapping software
  • A full driving licence and the ability to use 4x4 vehicles
  • Experience in managing forests for timber extraction and planting
