We are looking for a Fixed Term Obstetric Consultant to join the team of 29 Consultants in Women's Health at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, Bristol.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team when we are developing and expanding services offering high quality care to our women in all parts of our service.


The maternity department is one of the largest in the country, with more than 5,500 deliveries per annum with a 15 bed Consultant led delivery suite, a co-located birth unit and a stand alone birth centre at Cossham Hospital.

NBT is the host of the South West Maternal Medicine Network and the South West Placenta Spectrum Disorder Service. We have an active fetal medicine department and tertiary level 3 neonatal unit.


North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest Trusts in the country.

Last year the Trust treated over 100,000 inpatients, over 350,000 outpatients, 90,000 emergency department patients and helped deliver nearly 6,000 babies.

It employs more than 9,500 staff, has approximately 1,050 inpatient beds and income in excess of £540 million. We have specialist and tertiary level services in urogynaecology, endometriosis, fertility, vulval clinics and Placenta acrreta spectrum disorder. NBT has a level 3 NICU and is the host for the South West Maternal Medicine Network.


The Trust provides medical, surgical, neonatal and maternity care for its local population of approximately a million people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

The Trust also provides regional services in neurosciences, orthopaedics, pathology, plastic surgery and burns, renal medicine and transplant and urology and is the major trauma centre for the West Country.


The Trust moved the majority of its acute services to the Brunel Building in May 2014 which is regarded as one of the best hospital facilities in Europe, on the Southmead Hospital site.

The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

The women and children's services are delivered on the same site in a closely adjacent building.

The post holder will hold CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, or be within 6 months of this. They may have additional experience in other specialist areas to meet the needs of the department.


The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the post holder is absent.

The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme.

There is a strong research element in our department. The option to develop research to complement our departmental research plans and could be negotiated in job planning if or when appropriate


We are developing our women's health research - participating in multicentre trials in early pregnancy and colposcopy and research projects in fertility.
