Description

We are WSP - Join us and make your career future ready

In today's world it's important to work for a company that has clear purpose, giving back to communities and supporting what is truly important in the world.

When considering a career move it's vital to work for a business that is aligned to your values and goals, a place where you can belong.

See what WSP stands for in 2024 and beyond

WSP has a large, highly experienced and professional Ecology team who get involved with a diverse range of interesting projects across a number of sectors within the UK for both private and public sector clients.

Our work in ecology spans terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecology, arboriculture and forestry, biodiversity net gain, ecosystem services and natural capital assessment.

The team pride themselves on the integrated support offered by working alongside our in-house water, landscape, arboriculture, air quality and sustainability specialists to deliver commercially balanced, innovative and integrated solutions.

We offer a highly competitive salary and in 2023, we were able to offer more than 75% of seasonal ecologists a permanent role after their initial contract.

Your new role, what's involved?
Spending around 70% of your time with us in the field, your role will include:

  • Assisting our ecologists with planning and undertaking ecology surveys including extended Phase 1 habitat /UK Hab surveys and protected species surveys. Our seasonal staff have the opportunity to get involved in all types of surveys.
  • Collating, analysing and presenting data including the use of biodiversity metrics to assess loss or gain in biodiversity units and bat sound analysis.
  • Inputting into technical reports and other deliverables, such as licence method statements and management plans.
  • This role involves outdoor work, sometimes in remote locations, in all weathers with some requirement for evening work and staying away from home.
At WSP we pride ourselves on supporting individuals and giving everyone the chance to shine.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • An appropriate Degree in Ecology or a related discipline. Ideally, this would be a course accredited by the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • A postgraduate degree e.g. MSc, desirable but not a requirement.
  • Qualifying Member status with CIEEM (or are eligible for this).
  • Attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • An understanding of relevant wildlife legislation and ecological survey methodologies.
  • Experience of working with data including spatial data and/or producing GIS maps.
  • A full UK valid driving licence (ideally in some cases this may not be necessary)
  • Some demonstrable skills (not necessarily experience) in ecological survey.
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
