Introduction


The Parliamentary Archives holds over 13km of physical records dating back to 1497, it is a shared service of both Houses of Parliament, based in the House of Lords but jointly funded by the House of Lords and House of Commons.

It provides innovative and expert information management, preservation, access and outreach services enabling anyone in the world to use Parliament's records, both now and in the future.


The ARP Business Case has proposed that the House of Lords and the House of Commons will enter into an agreement with a partner organisation about the transfer of the Parliamentary records and the future provision of the Parliamentary Archive services.

There is no agreed date yet for the transfer, but this role will play a key role in delivering the work required to prepare and move the collections.


This is an excellent opportunity for individuals wishing to work in Collection Care at a paraprofessional level before, or while, undertaking professional training in Conservation/Collection Care.


The Role

The key activities for this role include:

  • Preservation cleaning and packing of Archival records
  • Measuring items for bespoke housing
  • Creation of bespoke housing for Archival records
  • Audit and track Archival records as they are cleaned and packed
  • Monitor stock to inform Line Manager of materials/equipment required
  • Flag with Line Manager any physical risks to collections
  • Flag with Line Manager any Health & Safety issues
  • Undertake other relevant/developmental tasks as agreed with the Line Manager

Competencies and Essential Qualifications

Collection Care Skills:high-quality practical/creative hands-on experience with working on arts and/or craft-based materials
- **Team Working and Collaboration**:the ability to use initiative to work alone or part of a team on special projects or routine tasks. Being flexible and adaptable to changing needs as they arise
- **Continuing Professional Development**:a willingness to learn and update knowledge and skills through research and training
- **Health and Safety
: an **understanding of H&S and how it related to a Heritage Collection
- **Organisational Skills and Problem Solving**: Ability to organise one's own time when working under pressure to meet deadlines, demonstrating problem-solving skills and a high level of initiative
- **IT Skills**: Intermediate computer skills in software packages including the Microsoft 365, especially Excel
