Role Purpose:

To research, develop and deliver training packages to Firearms Officers, associated roles
and other police departments. Shared responsibility for the daily management of stock and the safe storage of weapons and munitions held by SYP.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Identify training needs, define course aims and objectives, in accordance with force, departmental and external requirements.
  • Monitor and research developments in and amendments to Operational Firearms & Taser Policing Practices and other areas.
  • Design and develop course materials, training aids, manuals and workbooks to assist in the delivery of training.
  • Deliver training to students using a range of appropriate teaching methods to ensure course aims and objectives are met during the delivery of training. This includes the running and assessment of practical scenarios. Postholder to arrange scenarios, make appropriate riskassessment, liaise with partners and assess student performance against nationally recognised standards.
  • Provide tutorial support to students throughout their training. This includes mentoring and coaching where appropriate.
  • Monitor, assess and validate student performance towards internal and external accreditation. This specifically includes the assessment against NPFTC requirements.
  • Positively promote the value of training within the organisation.
  • Implement a comprehensive programme of staff development.
  • Identify and arrange external training input where appropriate (eg visiting speakers)
  • Must be prepared to travel nationally when required.
  • Must be able to achieve and retain Security clearance level vetting.

Skills and experience:


  • Previously performed the role of Armed Response Vehicle Officer (ARVO) within a Home Office Police Force or Agency.
  • Be, or have been a Police National Firearms Instructor (NFI)
  • As defined within the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC).
  • Alternatively, have the ability to pass a Police NFI course and has been an ARVO in the last 12 months
  • Hold or have the ability to achieve a Level 4 Training award
  • Hold or have the ability to achieve an A1 assessor (or equivalent) award.
