The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities & Alternative Provision (SEND & AP) directorate is part of the Families Group in the Department for Education.

The directorate are responsible for one of the Secretary of State's priority missions to drive delivery of an ambitious reform agenda to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND or in Alternative Provision, which was outlined in SEND and AP Improvement Plan published in March.


To support this work, we are recruiting to fill up to 2 EO roles within Strategy, Planning and Performance Division.


Job description:

These roles will play a key part in stakeholder engagement, contributing to ministerial briefings, and Business of State.

These roles will focus on one or more of the following:


  • Managing the directorate's briefing mailbox, which is our principle means of communication with parliament and the public.
  • Commissioning colleagues across the directorate to draft correspondence, briefing, PQ responses and support other business of state matters.
  • Supporting the wider team in drafting crosscutting cases, ranging from parents/carers talking about provision for children and young people with multiple needs, to drafting briefing for important ministerial meetings.
  • Keeping up to date with latest SEND and AP policy developments and emerging issues, to provide flexible support to the wider Engagement Unit as needed.

About the Apprenticeship
As this role includes completion of the Business Administration Apprenticeship (Level 3) please check the eligibility requirements below using the apprenticeship standard: Business administrator / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

  • You must have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to apprenticeship start date and not be undertaking another apprenticeship at the same time.
  • You must not already have a substantial amount of the skills and knowledge that is covered in the contents of the apprenticeship standard.
  • You must not have already worked in a similar role, or your previous learning, and/or work experience covers the contents (Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours) of the apprenticeship standard.
  • You already have all the skills and knowledge that is covered in the contents of the apprenticeship standard.
  • You have already worked in a similar role, or your previous learning, and/or work experience covers the contents (Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours) of the apprenticeship standard.
  • You have a degree (or equivalent) in Business Administration.
  • Part of this apprenticeship is to complete a level 2 English and maths functional skills qualification. If you have already achieved GCSEs in English and maths at Level 4 (grade C) or equivalent or a higher grade, you will not need to complete the functional skills qualification.
At the enrolment stage, the individual's eligibility will be checked by the training provider.
