The Local Area SENDCO will be the practice lead for leadership teams, SENDCOs, teachers and SEN professionals in education settings across the borough.

The role will lead, develop and embed good practice for children with special educational needs.

The role will work closely with the leadership team of education settings in the borough to plan their SEN provision, leveraging the resources ordinarily available in school and across the local area to meet the needs of learners at SEN support.

This role will work closely with maintained nurseries and early year's settings in the private, voluntary, and independent sectors, schools, and post 16 providers.


The post holder will play a key part in the integrated Education and SEND Management Team and will lead on the implementation of the vision of early intervention, working with education settings, local partners and families to ensure that learning needs of pupils are met at the earliest point and are supported to be included in mainstream provision.


The new role of Local Area SENDCo will support SEN Support planning and advice for schools and will also lead on SENDCo and school leadership SEND development.

The role will also coordinate the allocation of an inclusion budget to support education settings to create an enhanced offer to support the needs of students without recourse to an EHC Plan.

You will have demonstrable experience in driving system change in developing good practice for children with SEND.

You will possess skills in demonstrating interventions and coaching others and possess the ability to engage in collaborative problem solving with a range of stakeholders.

You will have a demonstrable ability to plan and deliver training that supports inclusive practice in all settings.

You will need to:

  • Take strategic and operation responsibility of SEN development portfolio for the SENDCO and school leadership, embedding the Council's approach of early identification and intervention.
