Description

The post holder(s) will work a maximum of 4 PA's working with leaders across the system to support the expansion of NHSE's Enhancing Generalist Skills programme; which is a professional development offer for all healthcare professionals with a syllabus covering six health and care domains and four key cross-cutting themes.

The aim of enhance is to equip all healthcare professionals with the additional generalist skills required to deliver excellent person-centred care across evolving complexities of the health and care system.

Linked to enhance the Long Term Workforce Plan has outlined the need to:
Expand existing pilots (trailblazers) to demonstrate the benefits of more generalist approaches to education and training.


Expand the NHS's Enhance Programme to enhance generalist skills across the first five years of postgraduate medical education, so that this programme is in place for all doctors in training by 2025.


The postholder will provide a key leadership role in delivering the ambitions of the LTWP, providing specialist clinical advice, input into policy development and leadership aligned the expansion of the enhance programme specifically across Medical Foundation Training and Integrated Care Systems.


This will involve working closely with senior leaders in the NHSE Workforce, Training and Education Directorate, Post Graduate Deans across Regional WT&E and clinical and system leaders from the health and care system.


This will be a high-profile role, drawing on their expertise, experience and leadership of the post holder to change the way NHS England maximises the value and impact of education and training.

The post holder will build on existing collaborative relationships with the higher education system, NHS providers and system partners to develop models for high quality, innovative education and training.

Extensive plans have been developed to deliver on this expansion into medical Foundation training and across multi-professions through ICSs.

Subsequently this post holder will be required to lead on the delivery of the following:

ICS expansion


To work with regional trailblazers to extend current enhance programme delivery models to include multi-professional learners and to promote interprofessional learning, training and working.


To develop the communication strategy for successful ICS engagement, including creating comms/marketing content based on the year 1 evaluation report findings, building business case rationale for how enhance can meet ICS mandates and developing a template/blueprint to support ICSs to implement enhance learning.


To work with regional trailblazers to engage interested ICB's promoting the enhance programme and the work of the current ICS pilots and positive impacts.

To work with national Postgraduate Medical Reform programme to undertake yearly bidding process and scoring process for interested ICS's.

The specific objectives required of the role are linked to section 2, which outlines the key deliverables of the enhance programme for 24/25 and 25/26.

Linked to this, the post holder will play a crucial role in ensuring the following performance metrics of the programme are achieved over the next 24 months.

20% of F1 doctors will undertake Enhance enable

33% - 50% of F1 doctors can access Regional/Trust delivered Enhance enable (live place-based programme)

50% of regions submit Foundation Priority programmes or an equivalent post for recruitment which include Enhance explore by 25/26.

Each region has enhance offer incorporated into at least 1 ICS including learners from multi professions by 25/26.
