Description

Falls are a significant issue in the care home sector, with residents three times more likely to fall than in the community.

Residents are at higher risk of falling due to increased complex health and care needs with multiple fall risk factors.

Initial scoping work by the research team suggested care homes had inconsistent access to falls awareness training, with some care homes having none, despite demand.

Previous research suggests that the most effective and engaging training is practical, interactive, with skills that easily transfer to the workplace and residents.

We propose a virtual reality based interactive falls training programme that managers and care home staff can engage with flexibly.

We have completed initial proof of concept research to co-develop a prototype with care home managers and staff from initial idea through to first stage prototype.

Further iterative development and research needs to be completed to ensure acceptability and usability of a minimum viable product (MVP).

Before we can test our intervention to assess feasibility and acceptability within practice, further work needs to be completed to expand the current basic prototype into a fully engaging and immersive training product (MVP).

As part of this development work, considering our commitment to the MRC Framework and to co-production with the end users we need to do further 'sense-checking' workshops during the development and then a further usability study with a full prototype.
