Lead Medical Examiner Officer, Full Time (8.30 am to 5 pm), Band 6 Permanent


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Medical Examiner Officer (MEO) position, to join our Medical Examiner Service at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

The purpose of the service is to provide independent oversight and safeguards for the scrutiny of all non-coronial deaths. The successful applicant will be responsible for the day to day organisation and management of the Medical Examiner Service.


Based within a busy office, the successful applicant will lead and manage the medical examiner officers, and work closely with the Medical Examiners in the scrutiny of deceased patients' medical records within the Trust and rolling out to non coronial deaths in the community; ensuring the provision of a high quality, robust service.


The successful applicant should be educated to degree level (or equivalent), have experience of supervising a team and a good working knowledge of the Medical Examiner System and the Coronial process and how the two interact.

A good knowledge and understanding of medical terminology and diagnoses surrounding causes of death are key to the role and good communication skills are essential when dealing with relatives of the deceased and medical staff.


Full training and support will be offered with regular supervision and networking opportunities with other Lead MEOs through the Regional Medical Examiner Officer.
