Established in April 2016, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) was set up to coordinate all aspects of nuclear business within the MOD; responsible for all submarines (from buying them through to disposal when they reach the end of their life), nuclear warheads, skills, related infrastructure and day-to-day nuclear policy.

DNO consists of the people, equipment and infrastructure required to successfully deter the most utmost threats to our national security and way of life.


Within DNO, the Warhead Directorate leads the UK Nuclear Warhead Programme which provides a stockpile of reliable, safe and effective nuclear warheads to support the UK's strategic nuclear deterrent now and in the future.


The Warhead Directorate has staff based in MOD Main Building, MOD Abbey Wood (Bristol), Aldermaston (Reading) and HM Naval Base Clyde (Scotland).

This post will be based at either Abbey Wood or Aldermaston.

Job description:


The successful applicant will be part of Warhead Stockpile Management's Programme Office and be responsible for maintaining project schedules and assisting with the reporting to the Stockpile Programme Support Board (PSB) and Programme Management Office (PMO) of Portfolio, Programme and Project (P3M) data in support of the WSM Programme Manager AH.

This post will have line management responsibilities.

The mission of the DNO is to keep safe and capable submarines at sea today and in the future.

We need a capable and credible nuclear deterrent to successfully deter the most extreme threats to our national security and way of life.

This post sits within the WSM division of DNO Warhead Delivery Team. Deputy Director WSM has responsibility for maintaining safe, effective, and available in-service nuclear warheads now and in the future.

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be part of the WSM Programme office providing support and guidance to the Project Managers.

They will be responsible for maintaining the schedules for all active projects within the programme, as well as enabling the creation of the stockpile key milestones.

This includes working closely with the project managers and providing advice and guidance to ensure all aspects of the project are defined.


This includes but is not limited to:

Delivery & Leadership

  • Lead on scheduling activity and work with the programme to support delivery of the business case benefits and outcomes.
  • Support capability building and the use of best practice in scheduling and reporting.
  • Provide expert advice for team members and the project community.

Project Scheduling

  • Develop and maintain the project schedule, capture assumptions and identify dependencies.
  • Challenge and test project assumptions to ensure that schedules are realistic and achievable.
  • Development of breakdown structures, quality criteria, product descriptions and monitoring strategy.
  • Support the project manager to identify options to optimise delivery through resource smoothing, resource levelling and rescheduling of activities.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure schedules are comprehensive.

Resources

  • Identify and plan for wider resource requirements for the project.

Project Performance & Controls

  • Gathers information from project teams and stakeholders and produces project performance reports.
  • Monitor and analyse information, reporting progress, slippage and highlighting areas of risk and opportunity.

Skills

  • Experience using Microsoft Project
  • Experience of industry standard scheduling approach, tools and processes
  • Experience within a project management environment
